Top 10 – Harry Potter Characters in the Books

The top 10 Harry Potter characters from the books, this has been a difficult top 10 to sort out as the series really does have so many brilliant characters. We really get to know them all so well in the books. Obviously so many to choose from and try to put in an order. I have gone for the first that come to mind from reading the books.

10. Weasley Twins – Fred & George

Ok So I cheated a little bit by including them both as one chracter, but lets face it they are nothing without each other. They really are just incredible together and such a double act, so much humour, yet so much honour they both have as well. We have to love all of the mischief they manage to get up to and the things they manage to get themselves in.

9. Remus Lupin

He was friends with Harry’s father when he was at school and with Sirius Black. He finds himself looking after and protecting Harry as well. He has a secret that he is a werewolf.

8. Sirius Black

Harry’s Godfather and best friend of James Potter, escapes from Azkaban and everyone thinks he is trying to kill Harry. That could not be farther from the truth, he wants to protect him and make sure he is alright. This is something he wants to do until his untimely death. He looks out for Harry and promises that he will always be there for him and one day they will be a proper family together.

7. Ron Weasley

Harry’s best friend who he meets on the train the very first day of Hogwarts, really does stick by him until the very end. Even though they did have a few fights and arguments over the years which resulted in them not speaking to each other for a while, but that was just something that was bound to happen when they became teenagers and jealously over different things kicked in. But they remembered how much they mean to one another and Ron is always there. He really is funny as well, giving us plenty of laughs throughout.

6. Tonks

I related so much with Tonks throughout the books. She has such difficult times with her love for Lupin and how that affects her abilities. She does not appreciate people treating her lightly and therefore does not stand for it, she is very independent and used to looking after herself, but when love takes hold she really does struggle.

5. Hermione Granger

A know it all and totally swot in schooling terms, but we all love her. Harry and Ron would have never been able to figure things out if it had not been for Hermione pointing them in the right direction and helping them out so much. They really do owe her a lot. But she grows into such a strong young woman and is shaped by everything they come up against.

4. Neville Longbottom

I found Neville to be such a fantastic character in the books, we really found out about his past and how much he grows as the series moves on. We cannot help but feel so sorry for him throughout but he grows into a fine young man when we reach the battle of Hogwarts. The background of his parents and the meeting with Harry and co at the hospital was probably one of the most heartbreaking scenes in the whole lot of the books. He really did become one of my favorite characters.

3. Harry Potter

The main man himself really is such an incredible character who we see grow up before our eyes. We stick by him through the teenage years, which would be difficult enough without the added thing of Voldemort coming back and wanting to obviously kill him. Especially when he has phases when people do not believe him. All of this while being constantly reminded how much he is like his dad, with his mother’s eyes of course. He therefore must do everything in their memory as they died to protect him.

2. Severus Snape

The most complex and interesting man in the whole series, we are never sure if he is good or bad. If he likes people or not and what his true story is. We do how ever figure out that their is a lot more to Snape than meets the eye. He has such a heartbreaking story which we do not find out until the very end, and I cried all the way through reading it.

1. Albus Dumbledore

The headmaster of Hogwarts and a man with a past, which we are never really sure what exactly happened until right at the end. A couple of twists and turns, yet we still find out that indeed Dumbledore was a great and brilliant man. Everything he ever done was to help others, he was never selfish and carried many burdens throughout his life. His authority is incredible and he is possibly the greatest wizard of all time.

    1. Great to see that our top two are the other way round! Snape really is incredible and his story had me broken down in tears.

So pleased that Tonks is in your list too, did you feel cheated by her character in the films?

      1. Definitely. I just re-watched Order of the Phoenix the other day, and soooo much got skipped over. And considering I haven’t read the 5th book in years, that’s really saying something.

It was pretty much “hey, look at this awesome girl who can change her hair….OK, now on to something else!!”

        1. Yeah it’s so disappointing, as her story with her love for Remus really did touch me. I felt like I could relate to her so much such a shame we did not get to see any of that on screen.
