I feel as though this film is very underrated and has such impressive performances from Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon. The characters feel real and I just love this scene/moment!

Billy Wilder was a brilliant Director – this as well as “The Days Of Wine And Rose” and “Sunset Boulevard” look deep into the dark parts of our lives

Oh I haven’t seen ‘The Days of Wine and Rose’ but I will have to try and watch it as I loved Sunset Boulevard as well!

It’s the true story of the beginning of Alcoholics Anonymous, and both Jack Lemmon and Lee Remick are terrific – and you are right “The Apartment” is a classic!

Not very on screen, but the whole thing around the Apartment is that Jack Lemmon’s work colleagues use it to have affairs.

Shirley MacLaine actually gets the guy in this one. Still stereotyped though, but it was a step up. 🙂

I don’t know if its underrated so much as just under-watched. It’s loved by many who have seen it, myself included. But I agree, it doesn’t get as much attention perhaps as other classics of the era. Which is odd, as it feels more modern than most of its contemporaries.

This as you say, is genuine classic. I watched it again recently myself and couldn’t help but notice what an influence it would have had on the TV show Mad Men!

I’d recommend it if you have time. Mad Men captures the spirit of the 1960s encapsulated in The Apartment. Especially these very sexist and (apart from Jack Lemmon) objectionable male characters.

Yes, he’s absolutely brilliant in the lead; portrays a very complex character in Don Draper.
