Snowpiercer (2013) Review

In the future when the world was forced into a second ice age after a failed experiment killed all life except those who boarded the Snowpiercer train. It travels around the world and a class system divides those who are aboard.

I am going to have to admit something when it comes to this film until the last week or so I hadn’t really heard of it. But when it was added on UK Netflix which actually gave the film its official UK release so many people on Twitter were talking about it. This obviously led to watching it and I am so pleased I follow so many amazing people on Twitter.

This film is outstanding and it is such a shame it didn’t get more of a release over the past six years. It has such an interesting plot with plenty of twists and turns throughout. As well as a truly amazing cast led by Captain America I mean Curtis. So he is out hero or anti-hero at times it is quite difficult to decide. He leads a revolution from the back of the train to attempt to take over the engine room and that is the basis of the whole film, those who have been put in the extreme lower class with no food and eventually given protein blocks to survive.

I found it fascinating as they moved throughout the train and the scene where they reached the classroom with all of the children to be utterly creepy and terrifying. The way they were teaching them about the train and everything that “happened” before the train was just creating a very strange generation. Then the twist with it was outstanding and really set a different tone for the film. When you think that most scenes are really dark, the classroom was so bright and cheerful.

In terms of performances and cast we know that Chris Evans is more than capable of leading a film and his role as Curtis was very impressive, showing the battle to survive with the odds stacked against you. Add in Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, John Hurt and Kang-ho Song as support from the poor end of the train. Then Tilda Swinton as the evil Mason is haunting in appearance and as ever a brilliant performance from the very versatile actress which is always a pleasure to watch. But I need to say wow to those teeth! In a slightly smaller but still very effective role is Ed Harris, who I always enjoy and actually find very underrated.

Overall, I really did think this was an outstanding film that truly deserves to be seen so much more. I am certainly thankful to Twitter for pointing this one out and Netflix UK for eventually making it easy to watch! So if you haven’t seen this yet, what are you waiting for? A film to help show that no matter what happens to the world a class system will always fall with the poor ending up at the bottom and left to fight.
