Purple Hearts (2022) Review

When troubled Marine Luke and struggling singer-songwriter Cassie agree to marry for the benefits the military brings, it was never going to be plain sailing when quite frankly they didn’t even like each other.

This is one of those films that I wasn’t really planning on watching but when Netflix force the trailer on you each time you log in or after you’ve watched something I eventually cracked and decided to watch it. I am now currently wondering why I fall for this so often, as quite frankly the films they tend to push at you like that are pretty bad. Purple Hearts is another example of just this and makes me just shake my head at myself to how and why I fell for it again.

I absolutely love romance and tragedy within that but do not be fooled about the way this film puts romance in it as from that first moment of the pathetic fake marriage you already know exactly what is going to happen after all of that.

Cassie had recently been diagnosed with diabetes and could not afford the medication that she needed due to the cost and not having medical insurance, which quite frankly is horrific and briefly highlights just how bad that is for people in the US. This was due to not having a steady job and attempting to be a singer-songwriter, she actually asked her friend who was a marine to marry her so she could get the medication. Something he is not so keen on as he wants to propose to his girlfriend. The Luke somehow comes in as a second option, and he could do with the extra money he gets for being married due to owing money from having a drug problem. That did make me wonder how he managed to become a marine as I was sure they had big drug testing and rules in the military?

Anyway they attempt to fool the system which lets face it was never really going to work was it? I think if I had realised that this was the storyline I would certainly not have watched the film as it was just really dumb. The worst thing is if it had more focus on the songwriting I think I would have liked it at least a little bit more as that was not a bad way to approach things.

Unfortunately this is not really a big surprise and what I often expect now from Netflix original films, we don’t seem to have that level of quality raised just yet. I am interested to how others found it though as I have seen some positives on social media? This one just certainly was not for me at all.
