Honor Rose has been focused on getting into Harvard for the whole time she has been attending High School. As it gets to the point where only four students are left as a possibility she is about to do what it takes to take down the competition, but can she see it through?
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having ambitious goals and wanting the best for yourself in life, and that is something that Honor wants for herself. Although her means of then achieving this takes a rather wicked turn to begin with as she attempts to take down the three very different competitors who also have a chance of getting into Harvard. The recommendation would come from guidance counsellor Mr Calvin, who is a total creep and should be around teenage girls at all!
Her plan to take down her competition would take some interesting turns and actually end up having some very good and impressive life lessons included. Travis Biggins a star athlete was also good academically, however he was keeping a secret that he was in fact gay. This was something that Honor was then going to use as a distraction and seems to come across in a horrible way but I felt as though the scene with his coach father was utterly perfect and fantastic at the same time as it went a totally different way to how I expected that. Kennedy Smith was very reclusive and struggling, she had written a play for the drama club to perform and Honor sees this as the chance to take her down, although that backfires when it actually turns out to be very successful. Then we had Michael Dipnicky who was a typical nerdy kid, something he even admits himself. After her friends followed him and saw that he was an orphan and living in a house in a horrible neighbour she pities him, but is he playing the long game as well?
This really is a lovely surprise of a film that I really did enjoy from start to finish, taking many different direction and twists and turns throughout which made it such a joy to watch. At times it reminded me of Easy A and Edge of Seventeen, which I see as a compliment as those are both very good coming of age films as well and I happily add Honor Society into that mix.
One of the main things I took from the film was that while at first you want and need something for yourself after actually getting to know people that can actually change your behaviour. As Honor became friends with the people she was trying to take down, and even starting a relationship with Michael it actually made her realise that any of them would have been a good choice. Although the little twist at the end was something I did not see coming and thought that was so evil in the best possible way of how not only one person was playing a game.
The casting was totally spot on with Angourie Rice taking on the leading role, which was really good to see after the supporting roles she has played so far within her career. She was engaging and great to watch throughout, the talking at the camera worked very well. Gaten Matarazzo from Stranger Things fame is great as well, don’t we all just love seeing them taking on different projects? Well, I certainly do that’s for sure! Armani Jackson and Amy Keum were also very good making up the supporting cast.
