The Menu (2022) Review

When a young couple travel to a remote island to experience a massively exclusive restaurant with a unique lavish menu prepared by Chef Slowik it would quickly develop into a night no one would ever forget.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Menu is a delicious journey into what dining has become when people attempt to find exclusive food and quite frankly an experience. We follow Tyler and Margot as they journey to the island, which sees them board a boat along with many other guests. An experience that was certainly not cheap at all, this meaning that the group that would end up sat at the tables were rather wealthy! As we go through the menu and the different courses we get to learn different things about the many people within the room, they all have issues and don’t come across in the best manner at all. It seemed as though the Chef had selected people in particular to attend this sitting, it would take a while for his reasons behind that to be revealed.

Margot is a fantastic character who we side with throughout and are firmly wanting to see her succeed. Especially considering she was never actually supposed to be there to begin with, which is a rather interesting plot point and twist. We get many twists throughout and each one is just as delightful as next, but naturally cannot spoil anything about the film! Not many of the characters are likeable though which I guess increases the enjoyment at times.

I have to admit that before going to see this film I didn’t really know much about it, but as it started and the tense nature that was instantly built up I had a feeling it was going to take an extremely sinister turn and that was something that I was totally right about! It reminded me of the style that ‘Ready or Not’ and ‘The Hunt’ which are sadistic but also had a touch of comedy in them as well. The Menu certainly for me goes into that same category.

Despite the very strange twists and turns I actually really did enjoy and like the film, although I don’t know if you are even allowed to claim that you liked this film? Does that mean you’re a little bit touched in the head in someways? Anyway, something I took from it was that it was poking fun at the way different restaurants have exclusive tasting menus for ridiculous prices and you get hardly any food at all. Quite frankly don’t we all just really want a burger and fries?

Anya Taylor-Joy is a truly fantastic actress who has already pushed boundaries with her role choices and that is a true joy so early on in her career, each performance offers more insight into her range as an actress. Ralph Fiennes never disappoints does he? I don’t think so anyway, he is engaging and dangerous all at once which means you cannot look away from the screen.
