Raymond & Ray (2022) Review

Two brothers who just happen to share the same name head out on a road trip for their estranged fathers funeral and must find out his final wishes for them, as they must come to terms with the past to move on in the future.

⭐️⭐️

When Ray and Raymond find out about the death of their estranged father it was not actually something that either of them seem all that bothered about and during the road trip we would find out many reasons why that is the case. Finding out that his final wish was for them to dig his grave together for him to be buried was something that just annoyed them even more.

Ray seemed to have a lot more hatred towards his father than Raymond, although neither really had any good memories to share. Even more so when more secrets would be revealed upon his death and it just then raise the question if anyone really knows even their own family members all that well. The brothers had not seen each other for five years and both blamed their father for the mess their adult lives turned into after the trauma caused by the childhood abuse.

Considering the subject matter of the film and the different plot points you’d think that it would have a lot of important things to say and moments. However, I was actually constantly bored throughout the film and it was one that I really did not think I was going to see out until the end. Which in all honesty was a little bit sad considering I was watching Ewan McGregor and Ethan Hawke on screen together, I really do like them both and it was therefore quite annoying to have to admit that this was just not a good film to watch.

In a film like this you really do have to care even a tiny little bit for the characters and that was severely lacking from the off. Not being very likeable did not help with any of it and considering the running time of the film is not overly long it felt a whole lot longer. I felt as though this was a shame as the Apple Original Films have been a lot better than this one.
