In London 1953, Agatha Christie’s play The Mousetrap was celebrating its 100th performance and everything was about to change as it was being adapted into a film, with sleazy American director Leo Kopernick’s drunken behaviour annoying the actors and those around the theatre. He is then killed backstage!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Enter Inspector Stoppard to investigate the murder and being shadowed by the inexperienced yet enthusiastic Constable Stalker, who is trying to learn with the view of becoming an Inspector and therefore questions every single little thing he does. Everyone at the theatre is naturally declared a suspect in the murder and quite frankly each person has a motive to have killed Kopernick.
As the investigation goes on we get plenty of twists and turns throughout the plot, that I am certainly not going to spoil as that is the whole point of watching a murder mystery. The whole staging within the theatre and alongside The Mousetrap is good in terms of that it is also a murder mystery and will leave you guessing whodunnit and who else could be involved. Making it a very nice parallel in terms of the play being shown on stage a few times with different scenes.
Stalker is quite obsessed with the play and maybe that is one of the reasons she really wants to become an inspector one day, excited to be working with Stoppard even if his best days seem to be long behind him as he seems to enjoy too much alcohol. This then raises the question if he is even fit to be leading the investigation. We even get Agatha Christie thrown into the mix as well!
I really did find myself engaged and enthralled with this film and I think the standard of the cast was certainly a massive pull for that. Saoirse Ronan has easily become one of my favourite actresses in recent years and I will watch anything that she is in, I loved the naive and enthusiastic nature she had with her character and felt as though she worked very well with Sam Rockwell. Another actor who I really do enjoy watching in pretty much anything and everything, never afraid to take on different characters and quite frankly a damn joy to watch. Harris Dickinson taking on playing Richard Attenborough was another highlight.

This just began streaming here in the US and I am looking forward to seeing it!
