Suspicion (1941) Review

When handsome playboy Johnnie Aysgarth meets Lina McLaidlaw on a train in England and they take a walk together. After hearing her parents claim she will never marry this pushes her further into this relationship and marriage!

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Considering she did not really know Johnnie and after marrying him finds out that he doesn’t actually have a job or income and had planned on living off her wealthy father, as he had been living on borrowed money. Attempting to change him a little bit she manages to get him a job, but that then spirals to gambling and selling heirlooms that don’t even belong to him.

As her father was so against the marriage it was never going to be that easy to then combine everyone within her life and the choice and decision to marry Johnnie would pull her away from her family and things would never really be the same again, something that was quite frankly a shame really.

It has plenty of twists and turns as we wonder who exactly has a different motive and if Johnnie is honest or not. Plus wondering if Lina just kept making bad mistakes. It also made me think about the changes in terms of it being either a sin or strange if a woman did not get married by a certain age, although I am very pleased that totally is not a thing anymore!

Joan Fontaine won the Best Actress Oscar for her performance in this film and it really is very easy to see why, she puts in an incredible performance and is such a joy to watch throughout. Naturally catching up with another Cary Grant film was totally the reason I decided to watch this one as I am a big fan and I do enjoy that he plays the handsome playboy so very well!
