Tony Towers was somewhat of a local celebrity, a successful nightclub manager and is currently engaged to a younger woman named Sue. When they get on a train to Nottingham for a Christmas family reunion everything is about to get a little strange when he moves between the train carriages.
⭐️⭐️
As Tony moves between the carriages he is about to experience different phases of his life and realising how different decisions and conversations changed everything and not necessarily for the better it was often for the worst. But it was made a little bit strange with the fact that he could actually change the events of his and others history by how he behaves in that carriage, going forwards is a 10 year leap forward and going back is a 10 year leap into the past. No matter on his decisions though he always seems to come to awful and rather desperate endings for those he cares about.
When he eventually realises the power in his actions he must really think about how he is behaving towards members of his family, but it also highlights how different life events have changed him and resulted in the breakdown of relationships that are romantic and friendship. With that it really did have a good premise going for it but in execution it fell very short. I guess it takes on a type of Christmas Carol/Scrooge and maybe even It’s A Wonderful Life for seeing how things have been, currently are and what’s to come which is certainly seen as a classic Christmas film method. Last Train to Christmas though just did not really have many likeable characters which made it very difficult to care, as we didn’t really see much in the past that made us feel sorry for Tony, given a lot of rather horrible moments and decisions.
This was actually a film that I meant to watch last year when it was released but naturally as it passes Christmas and into the new year it isn’t really something you then want to watch. So I jumped at the chance to watch it this year, although maybe that long wait made it even more disappointing? I love Michael Sheen and really do think he is one of the best actors currently working, but I felt as though he wasn’t given a lot to work with other than looking different in each change of year which was a shame given his utter talent.
Along with Sheen it does boast some rather impressive British actors and the cast is certainly a good pulling point. I guess overall I had just thought it was going to offer a lot more than it did in the end. Although it does not fall into the cheesy Christmas film genre which is a massive plus in many ways.
