Mainfest (Season 1-4) Review

When a flight from Jamaica to New York City is overbooked passengers are offered the chance to go on a later flight for compensation. However, flight 828 on landing has been missing for five and a half years! But those on board it was only the flight time of a few hours.

*THIS POST CONTAINS SPOILERS*

Until around three weeks ago now I don’t think I had even heard of or even noticed Manifest before! I know that’s probably a little bit crazy considering it actually seems to be rather popular and had quite a fanbase. Anyway spotting it on Netflix I read that it was about passengers on a plane who landed 5.5 years after taking off and did not age. Ok interesting concept, so I was in and watched the first episode. Thinking actually I’m going to keep going, I ended up binge watching all four seasons in about two and a half weeks.

Crazy I know!

Anyway I feel into the Manifest world and became rather obsessed with what actually happened on flight 828. Especially with Michela and Ben Stone, who somehow became the leaders of everyone on board the plane. Within the first episode we see that they can hear a voice telling them to do or not do things, which seem important. These become known as callings.

Everything would get rather historical and somewhat religious as they attempt to figure out what happened to them and why they are now put in a position of helping others. Although morals will be tested and if you are not a good person it will catch up with you eventually. I think that’s a good life lesson put across throughout the show.

Ben’s son Cal was the youngest on the flight and he begins drawing as a different way of being able to show his callings. He was suffering with cancer when getting on the flight and the fact that Dr Saanvi Bahl was on that flight, she came up with a cure. Mick had been proposed to before the flight to Jamaica by Jared Vasquez a fellow detective and she had made a big decision. Although on getting back he was now married to her best friend.

I found it both fascinating and devastating for different stories, the fact that for those on the flight only that time had past but in the real world it was 5.5 years. I mean come on that is such a long time, so people had died and others remarried and the trauma caused by this was just on a different level. In all honesty that is what gripped me to begin with.

It does push the boundaries in terms of the religious links and getting well and truly into the ideas behind being resurrected. Along with that some of the episodes had quite the horror feel to them and at the very least thriller. That made it exciting of course, with a few jumps along the way. As the seasons pass we get to see more of the passengers and mainly on Ben and Mick to try and protect them. Obviously Cal is the ultimate key to it all. In the first season a mystery Major was involved in testing on some of the passengers and was basically after them all, even though her identity was a mystery.

It’s the ultimate idea of second chances and being chosen to have that opportunity, but you must ensure that you don’t mess up that second chance. Especially when they find out that a death date is in place, the exact about a time that the plane was missing. So 5.5 years from the moment they got back. This is then shown with others that went through something similar to what happened to the plane, including Zeke who had been appearing in callings for Cal and Mick whilst trapped in a cave.

Vance was obviously a fantastic character as well, considering it seems as though he is against all of the passengers to begin with, but actually he is attempting to find out more about the Major as well. His friendship with Ben was a particular highlight. The other relationship I was rooting for was Mick and Jared, like come on they just seemed so perfect. However, I can also understand that ending as heartbreaking as it all was to watch.

I must add that if you’re in the UK then season 1 and 4 are on Netflix with season 2 and 3 on Sky. So don’t allow Netflix to play on after the end of season 1 like I did! Just a good piece of information as even a couple of minutes did create some spoilers.

I don’t think I have hated a character as much as Angelina, especially considering at first I will admit that I did feel sorry for her as everything was just against her right? Well, yes I do admit that but she then went way too far and was past the point of return for anything really. Her ending was perfect quite frankly.

The ending. Ok I need to just say that I couldn’t work out which direction it was going in and I actually really liked it, thought it was quite a perfect way to do it. It actually did make me feel happy seeing how it went and who wouldn’t love to have a second chance? As I have so many things I wish I could go back in time and change.

  1. As cheesy as this was in parts, my wife and I were both fans and enjoyed it throughout, wondering the whole time what was going on and where everyone would end up. Which brings up the ending, we thought it was kind of weird but at the same time wrapped up the story and characters well. Others have failed at this, usually because they aren’t really ending a series but just rebranding it in a spinoff. The Walking Dead, a show we enjoyed for years, had such an epic fail of an ending we wished we hadn’t even watched it. Jericho and Gilligan’s Island both wrapped things up better than TWD. Anyway, this was a fun review to read and I’m glad you stumbled across it. It is a hidden gem.

    1. It kinda reminded me of FlashForward which only had one season I do believe and was just left. I will agree that the ending was weird as I was like woah at first then really appreciated how they tied it all up.
