When a family looking to enjoy a rather luxurious getaway takes a very strange turn when a cyberattack seems to have stopped all devices from working and two strangers claiming to own the house turn up late at night at the door.

Leave the World Behind is one of those films that keeps making you guess what is going on, only for you to fully doubt yourself a few minutes later. Which quite frankly I truly believe is a very special thing to be able to do within a film, even more so for this one which even in the trailers doesn’t give much away at all.
In the opening scene we see Amanda Sandford truly contemplating life and looking out the window at people starting their days and in what we think is a rather lovely monologue about people but she then finishes with “I f**cking hate people” and from that very moment I knew this was going to be an enjoyable ride. With that amazing statement she then books some time away with her husband Clay and two children Archie and Rose.
Rose is rather obsessed with Friends and on her first ever viewing of the entire series, thanks to streaming services. I mean they missed a trick in having her watching the episode that Julia Roberts was in, but never mind maybe that would have been too much! But it certainly entered my head. Like any siblings she argues a lot with her older brother Archie, who is just obsessed with messaging his girlfriend.
The house the family are staying in is rather impressive and in the middle of nowhere, everything is about to start getting a little bit strange though. On a trip to the beach a ship begins to get closer and closer to the shore until it ends up hitting the sand. This would be the start of the whole world it seems falling apart.
Late that same night G.H. Scott and his daughter Ruth turn up at the house and even though he claims to own it, Amanda doesn’t believe him and as viewers we find it all hard to believe as well. He seems to give off the impression that he knows what is going on with the attacks and that puts us more on edge.
While all of this is going on we get some rather crazy scenes involving deers, Tesla’s and Rose freaking out wanting to watch the final episode of Friends. I mean come on the young girl only wanted to know what would happen to Ross and Rachel, we have all be there before!
The film highlights the reliance on smart phones, computers, social media, streaming services and everything be powered by satellite signals and really does show that without the power of the internet we are left with not a lot. I have seen so many truly negative comments about the ending of the film and I absolutely adored it, thought it was very brave to go that way and surely it is one last love in to physical media and I for one am well and truly for that.
Obviously all in for Julia Roberts who has always been and will always be my favourite actress. I felt as though Farrah Mackenzie was a standout in terms of performances though. With Ethan Hawke and Mahershala Ali both offerering some good moments as well.
This won’t be for everyone which I feel is another reason I liked it so much, cliffhanger endings are great because they leave people annoyed with missing out on a happily ever after.

SPOILERS! I hated the ending. There was much of it explained if you really watched and listened, and with the creepy intensity it made it engaging and a good movie. But so much was left unexplained, like the behavior of the animals, that I felt cheated at the end. Listening to clues on the way the ending wasn’t too much of a cliffhanger for me, because it could all add up in multiple ways. That made it good for me, but the stuff that otherwise made no sense needed to be explained. Like the animals and why so many cars were going… where? And why a small island has so many planes crashing on it, when it seems they would navigate to the cities.
