Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023) Review

Contunuing the story of teenager Billy Batson who when saying “SHAZAM” becomes a Super Hero and alter ego Shazam. When a trio of ancient gods desend on Earth in search of the magic that was stolen from them long ago, everything was about to change!

Firstly I just want to claifty that I actually enjoyed the first Shazam film and give it 4 stars out of five, and therefore to then go with one for this sequel is not really something I was expecting at all. Honestly though I thought the film was just dreadful from start to finish, I even doubted if I was even going to make it to the finish to be brutally honest. How do you add Helen Mirren and Lucy Liu in as evil characters and mess it up so badly?

The jokes from the first film were well and truly rehashed from start to finish, which sometimes doesn’t matter in films and that is something that Deadpool did but it worked. For me nothing worked in this one and given that I caught up with it on Sky Cinema I am actually pleased I didn’t manage to catch it at the cinema.

Maybe the constant links by Billy/Shazam to the Fast and the Furious franchise and the whole “family” approach just annoyed me, as I am not a fan of that series at all and hate the pull on family, so that didn’t help with the plot in this one. As the put together family who now have super powers yet keeping it from their adoptive parents grew old very quickly.

I’d honestly advise not to bother with this one, if you missed it at the cinema it is not worth catching up with at all.
