Godzilla Minus One (2023) Review

Post World War II, Japan is at a truly low point and it’s about to get worse when a new crisis emerges in a form of a giant monster but will anyone actually believe it? Named Godzilla.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

*Original title: Gojira -1.0*

The story focuses around Shikishima who had been in the war but failed in his role as a kamikaza pilot, something which mechanic Tachibana works out that he faked the technical issues. On the base in Odo Island they are about to encounter the beast that is known as Godzilla, a dinosaur type creature whuch attacks. Every man is killed and Tachibana blames Shikishima as he fails to shoot the gun from his plane.

Straight away we get right into seeing Godzilla and at that early moment I realised that this film was going to be impressive, if you think about the majority of monster based films the build up to first seeing them is very long. This does not mess about and bang we get to see the big beast very early on in the film.

Shikishima must battle with survivors guilt and hwne he returns home he finds his parents were killed in the bombing of Tokyo. He meets Noriko and she had been attempting to care for an orphaned baby named Akiko. The pair work together and come somewhat a family in supporting the young girl, while this is happneing he takes a dangerous job as a minesweeper and this will lead to move encounters with Godzilla.

The great thing about this build up is that it spans over a couple of years and shows that Godzilla did not go all out attack instantly, but the build up to the next attacks were done in a very impressive manner. Something that amuses me about Godzilla that even when angry he always looked happy and like a big smile on his face, and that made it more entertaining. Not forgetting that the score and dramatic music was slotted in so effortlessly and made for top entertainment.

Along with how Godzilla appeared on screen we were also given characters that we cared about and that gave the film an extra edge. I became emotionally invested and attached, quite frankly I was not expecting that at all. So certainly an added bonus in making an all rounded film that was great to watch. It felt fitting to have this as my final cinema trip of 2023, given an amazing trip to Tokyo earlier this year.
