Looking into the life of Leonard Bernstein and the complex love story with Felicia Montealegre, spanning over 30 years.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Maestro is an attempted emotional journey to look into the relationships of Lenny and those around him, in particular with his wife Felicia and the three children they shared. Looking over those years to how he also tried to balance this with his brilliance and work.
However, I actually thought we might have been given more of a look into his career in that sense and I felt that it lacked overall by not focusing on that. Then finding out that he had many affairs and sexual relationships with men, which was slighly mentioned a little bit or maybe that should be more implied? I don’t think it then did everything credit to paint a full picture of him.
I did like the way the score of his music was placed throughout the film and thought that creative edge made it very good at times, but not enough for it to be very good overall. I found this to be a shame really as I had been really looking forward to this, especially given a lot of talk and build up surrounding it.
Bradley Cooper went all in with this film and had studied Bernstein for many years while working on the film, taking on the leading role as well as directing and co-writing. Even with all of that I felt as though Carey Mulligan overshadowed him throughout, her performance is utterly fantastic and that is something we have grown to fully expect from her, as she is a fantastic actress.
