About My Father (2023) Review

Sebastian wants to propose to his girlfriend Ellie who is from a wealthy American family, his father Salvo an old school Italian immigrant might not make it through the weekend with them!

⭐️⭐️⭐️

About My Father is looking at how the divides in society within American will be crossed when a relationship is formed. I guess in someways it is a slightly different version of Meet the Parents, which left me pleasantly surprised.

Salvo is a well respected hairdresser within his community and when his son Sebastian tells him that he has been invited with Ellie’s family for the weekend in a super rich area he is not happy that he will be left alone. Managing to get in on the invite they both head to the exclusive country club area and are about to see things in very different ways.

Ellie’s family are quite ridiculous which makes it hilarious to be honest, the way they are not connected with the real world and money is no option. Allowing crazy moments and decisions because I mean who even cares when your that rich! I thought the relationship between father and son was seriously the highlight in making me give the film 3 stars over 2, as the pure love between them and willing to change and do things differently really gives you so much hope. Salvo going all in on the American dream was great, oh and maybe don’t mention the peacock?

Robert De Niro is a legend of an actor, but we know that in recent years some of the comedy films he has appeared in have been terrible. I am happy to say in this one he is easily the best thing about it! Sebastian Maniscalco has based some of the story on his own life and his own father who immigrated from Italy aged 15.
