Wicked Little Letters (2023) Review

When letters full of profanities cause mayhem in the small town of Littlehampton, rowdy Irish migrant Rose is charged with the crime which is mainly against Edith Swan a deeply conservative local.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is actually based on a real case which truly shocked the small seaside town of Littlehampton in the 1920s. Edith is outraged at the horrendous letters she has been receiving filled with many swear words and horrible things.

Wicked Little Letters is wickedly funny from start to finish, with plenty of hilarious exchanges mainly due to the content of the letters. Within all of that, it does have some quite nice and interesting characters with stories to tell and shout about. Taking on the Police with Officer Gladys Moss who must state that she is a woman each and every time, showing that it was not easy for women to enter the police force. Then we have Rose Gooding who had left Ireland and quite frankly did whatever she wanted. Edith Swan who was trapped, still living with her mother and father and quite frankly hating everything about her life. It really managed to show three very different women and that they could do something to change it all.

The film keeps the viewer guessing for about half of it on who was behind writing the letters, and I guess it was no real surprise when we actually found out. It also pokes fun at the police and how certain things you could just get away with in the 1920s. Quite frankly, then realizing that this was 100 years ago makes it amusing as well; we do hope that some manners of investigation have changed now in 2024.

I am such a huge fan of Jessie Buckley and truly adore seeing each different role that she takes on, really going for it no matter what part and that is truly inspiring. Then having her opposite Olivia Colman, who is such a national treasure and just quite frankly again delightful in whichever role she takes on. Hearing her swearing constantly seriously will just make you laugh, as she has a smirk on her face as if she should not be swearing! Anjana Vasan was also fantastic, making up the three more leading roles. Then with Joanna Scanlan, Gemma Jones, Timothy Spall, Eileen Atkins, and Malachi Kirby in supporting roles, it really is a very impressive cast.
