Fingernails (2023) Review

Anna and Ryan have found true love and it is all confirmed by a new technology which is very controversial. Anna still has so many doubts about it and takes a job at one of the love testing institutes, which leads to meeting Amir.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Anna cannot really get her head around her relationship with Ryan, even though they have been together for a long time she isn’t fully beliving that it is real love and that they will actually be together forever. She then decides to do some further research when taking on a job at an institute which is designed to test the presence of romantic love in desperate couples.

When seeing the different tests within this institution it’s actually quite frightening to think how truly desperate many people are when it comes to love and relationships. Maybe that was the whole point of this film, to highlight that you cannot actually force love and force those feelings with another person. So basically Anna takes on that role for the viewer, to explore what it all really means. The title of Fingernails is a big part of the film as well, which leaves one of the final scenes still engraved into my memory.

Fingernails is one of those films that attempts to take things to the next level and raise different issues surrounding love and attempting to find your soul mate. In someways it reminded me at times of The Lobster, daring to look at everything in the slightly different ways.

Got to give it to the filmmakers though for putting togehter a fantastic trio with the cast in Jessie Buckley, Riz Ahmed and Jeremy Allen White. All three have been enjoying a lot of career success in recent years and all going from strength to strength across different projects. Hence the reason I decided to give it a try, they are all ok with what they have to work with and the film is just pretty average really. Won’t be for everyone that’s for sure but not a bad effort from Apple TV+.
