Yesterday Cineworld annouced that 6 cinemas are going to close at the end of September. Those being Glasgow Parkhead, Bedford, Hinckley, Loughborough, Yate and Swindon – Regent Circus.
Considering the rumours circulating on Thursday and Friday that 25 cinemas were going to be closed, and lists of the at risk 100 Cinemas being posted in articles online by members of the press and that the staff would find out on Friday. Again that didn’t happen and then yesterday the annoucement of the six closing cinemas was made, along with Cineworld stating the reason behind this was a cost-cutting drive.
Naturally the handling of this was very poor, with all Cineworld staff being put in a terrible position with those rumours. For now 6 closures, but it does make you wonder why 25 was the number that had been branded around as surely that did come from somewhere? It seems that some issues is the amount of rent that needs to be paid and the money then actually coming in not really adding up.
Cinemas really have had a big struggle post the covid long term closures and the ongoing battle with streaming services, especially given the turnaround from cinema to home viewing now. Obviously I personally prefer to watch films on the biggest screen possible with the best sound, that isn’t how everyone feels though.
I have had my Cineworld Unlimited card for nearly 20 years now and have always got so much worth out of it. I can understand though the expense if you don’t go very often, as ticket prices for everything just keep going up and up. Although in comparsion to theatre, music concerts and sporting events going to the cinema is still the cheapest form of entertainment.
I guess we just have to watch this space for any more potential closures towards the end of the year, I have to also add that this summer has been rather poor for film releases which certainly does not help!
