The Union (2024) Review

Mike McKenna is a down to earth construction worker who lives in a small town in New Jersey. One night his high school sweetheart Roxanne Hall turns up at the bar and everything is about to get rather crazy!

⭐️⭐️⭐️

It didn’t take long for me to be engaged in the film with The Promised Land by Bruce Springsteen playing very early on in the film, a certain nod to the New Jersey setting! Also the town of Paterson was nice to hear again as well for me personally, as when I lived out in NJ back in 2009 that was a place right next to where I lived so that was a nice throwback!

Anyway in terms of the film it showed that Mike had not really achieved very much in his life but he was actually content with how it all was, or at least he believed he was until Roxanne turns up and those feelings come back (and we get another Springsteen song) but having her drug him and take him to London was not how he expected any of that night to go.

Roxanne is a secret agent for the US Intelligence agency and recruits Mike into the latest mission, although when he finds out the reasons why she picked him it probably isn’t the biggest compliment in the world. The out of his depth nature and with only a limited time for some training does create some amusing moments which I guess were a little bit obvious but I still found it enjoyable enough.

While it does tick all of the normal action comedy twists and turns, I still thought it did enough to keep me engaged, throwing in some decent car chases as well as a couple of twists (which you will easily guess). It is probably what we have grown to expect from this style of Netflix original film. I mean, we know it was never going to be reaching for any awards.

Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry have been friends for many decades and this is the first film that they have done together, I thought it was great to see them bounce off one another. I like watching them both seperately, so having them together really was such a nice little bonus really.
