Heretic (2024) Review

When two young missionaries Sister Barnes and Sister Paxton are drawn into a dangerous game in the house of a strange man named Mr. Reed.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Sister Paxton and Sister Barnes were thinking that everything was going to be good when visiting Mr. Reed, a man who had shown interest in the church they represent. They are mormons and head to his house to talk to him about Jesus Christ, being part of the Latter-day Saints.

As they enter Mr Reed’s house he assures them that his wife is in the next room and that she has a blueberry pie cooking in the oven, everything about him and house seems a little bit strange but they try not to judge too much. Although that quickly reaches a point where they cannot deny they have walked into a trap.

Reed is bizare and rather irratic as he eventually begins a very threatening lecture within his study, on his beliefs and that all religions are adaptations of the other and comparing board games and songs to this, which in all honesty was a rather interesting way to put his points across.

After this and writing on the two different doors and claiming they can only leave through the back of the house, he labels one “belief” and the “disbelief” which is somewhat of a warped test just to see what they will do. After this point everything takes a rather crazy turn, and has a few rather shocking moments which I will not spoil. I do though feel I need to mention that the South Park musical had a very small mention early on and made me laugh!

Overall I thought it was an interesting psychological thriller, and the casting of Hugh Grant as Mr. Reed was a stroke of genius, with him being extremely creepy, and that was something I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. The trailer set that very nicely to make you want to see him in all his glory. Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East were both good working together as very different characters and bounced off each other and Grant very well.
