Blitz (2024) Review

Set in London during the German bombing campaign during World War II, known as the Blitz. We see how different groups of people deal with this and attempt to survive.

⭐️⭐️

Our main plot is that of young George who is put on a train to be evacuated and kept safe away from central London by his mother Rita. He takes this very badly, runs away at the train station after telling her he hates her and jumps on the train. It doesn’t take too long for him to regret his choice and he then decides the best option is to jump of the train and journey home.

While I fully agree that could have created a very interesting film and some good moments, the fact that I really did not care about George at all with his awful attitude meant that I just quite frankly didn’t care if he made it home. I know that sounds absolutely brutal but it is essential in this type of story to ensure the viewer becomes emotionally invested within the characters.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse he then ends up with Albert and Beryl who are utterly horrible people, and at that point it feels as though we have entered a version of Oliver Twist. Which is very bizarre thing really considering Stephen Graham and Kathy Burke were in those roles.

I am truly at the point though of wanting to watch anything that has Saoirse Ronan in, so this one felt perfect given my interest in World War II. In particular with this film as both of my Nanna’s were evacuated during the War, and I actually used to go and visit the woman that one of my Nanna’s stayed with during that time period. I guess it is crazy thinking about it now, people putting children on trains and having no clue if they would see them again.

Therefore it fell very short of my expectations given the subject matter and cast.

  1. I’m glad I read your review because I thought I was expecting too much or something. I’ve tried watching it twice and have turned it off both times. It’s terrible. I want to like it, want to learn something from it, but it’s just terrible.
