A Complete Unknown (2024) Review

An unknown 19 year old Bob Dylan arrives in New York City in 1961 with just his guitar and forges relationships with music icons leading to a rise in fame and groundbreaking performances in folk music.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The incredible rise of the young Bob Dylan as a folk singer to concert halls and being able to top the charts with his own unique and incredible songs. Spanning over the first early years and the impact of the Newport Folk Festival on his whole career and the controversy of the 1965 edition with electric.

We are taken on the journey with young Bobby who is taken under the wing of Pete Seeger who instantly knows this young man is going to be a true gem. Having turned up at the hosptial to meet Woody Guthrie, a singer songwriter he had admired, but his health was not the best. This created some rather emotionally charged scenes with Bob and Pete. Alongside the songwriting and becoming famous, we also get to see the love life with Sylvie who seems to be his biggest first love and then the complex relationship with fellow singer Joan Baez who was already rather famous on the folk scene. Then the impact of Jonny Cash and the relationship the pair had, which started by writing letters to one another.

I really enjoy a music biopic and I have always liked a few Bob Dylan songs but I guess I never really fully appreciated or realised just how many he actually has written over the years, with the time period of this film being those very early years. It is engaging and follows the usual formula for this style of film but I personally love that. The dynamic of the change from acoustic to electric was an interesting aspect, as this is always something that seemed to be frowned upon by different communities within music.

Timothee Chalamet is utterly brilliant in the leading role of Bob Dylan and he really gets to show off just how good of an actor he is, playing the instruments as well. Edward Norton is a true delight in the supporting role, with Elle Fanning also putting in a good performance but overshadowed by Monica Barbaro who is such a scene stealer.

It’s been nearly a week now since I saw the film at the cinema and I have been utterly obsessed with listening to Bob Dylan since. How many roads must a man walk down?
