Unstoppable (2024) Review

Based on the true story of wrestler Anthony Robles who was born with one leg and defied all odds joining the Arizona State University wrestling team and winning the National Championship in 2011.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

Anthony was raised by his mother Judy in Arizona and during his time at High School he discovered a passion for wrestling and joins the school team. He never lets his physical challenges stop him and this then creates an incredible competitor given his determination and relentless training. He knows he has to work harder than those around him to succeed. The next step he wanted to take was wrestling in college, but despite his success at High School level he was not offered scholarships from the top schools and he turns down Drexel University to stay close to his family and is a walk on at Arizona State University.

We get to see the training that he had to put in and how he had to adapt and be twice as strong both mentally and physically. This does create some impressive scenes with the training, in particular the run in the trails! Alongside that we see an abusive stepfather who certainly did not help Anthony at all.

There’s absolutely no denying that this is an incredible true story, but the way in which the film then comes across does not do it all justice for me. I adore anything to do with sport as it is the area in which I have always worked and been part of, so I always expect a little bit extra with a sports drama.

I felt as though it could have had even more to really highlight it all, I do love that Anthony Robles himself was the double for the wrestling scenes though! Jharrel Jermone is ok in the leading role, but doesn’t really exhibit much change in emotion and I felt as though that was partly why it lacked that little bit of spark to make it even better. Jennifer Lopez was actually quite the suprise with this one and I felt as though both Michael Peña and Don Cheadle as the two coaches needed more screentime.
