When Ani a young escort in Brooklyn meets Ivan she believes everything is about to change for her, after buying her for the week they get married. That is not going to go down well with his wealthy Russian family.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Ani becomes the envy of all the other girls that she works with when she bags Ivan as a client, due to the fact that she can speak Russian. He seems very immature but gives her plenty of money so that is something that she actually likes and enjoys. Let’s face it he didn’t have any good characteristics away from the money that’s for sure.
Although saying that our Ani isn’t that likeable either, I seriously could not believe how she thought this immature young man was going to be her saving grace. Maybe hitting a low point you would believe anything? Surely she wasn’t that dumb though to believe the marriage was going to work, or last, or the fact that what only felt like the Russian mafia was involved wasn’t going to be an issue as well?
Anora is Pretty Woman, if it went completly wrong and let’s say it batshit crazy! Just when you feel as though evrything is about to settle down the next ridiculous moment happens. The only character who can have any credit for being a little bit decent (just) was Igor who tried his best to be fair towards Ani, although she hilariously made that extremely difficult for him to begin with.
This was the winner of the Palma d’Or in 2024, so the Oscar nominations are no surprise really. It has such a good edge to it though, despite the unlikeable characters but maybe that is what actually makes it more entertaining.
Mikey Madison puts in a very good leading performance and pretty much moves from kick ass to someone you feel sorry for scene by scene. Yura Borisov with his sad eyes is the absolute scene stealer though!
