How to Train Your Dragon (2025) Review

Everything isn’t as it seems when an ancient threat endangers both Vikings and dragons on the Isle of Berk, an unlikely friendship between Hiccup an inventive Viking and Toothless a Night Fury dragon will change everything both species had been fighting for.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hiccup wanted nothing more than his father Stoick to be proud of him, but he was not a natural when it came to fighting and killing dragons which is what Vikings were the most proud of, this made him a laughing stock of the village. On one final attempt to be noticed with one of his inventions he actually does strike a dragon, not that anyone would believe him.

Upon meeting the dragon he names as Toothless, he actually realises that they aren’t to be feared and it was just as scared as he was. Obviously he cannot tell anyone about this and uses it to his advantage in the training he is being forced to complete. Although that did get him closer to Astrid.

This is the first official film that DreamWorks Animation have turned into live-action. (Yes, I know the whole live-action thing is complicated as obviously still massive amounts of CGI, unless someone has found real dragons somewhere).

Now, I have to admit that I didn’t really have any expectations for this film at all, while I have seen the animated film it might have only been once or twice. I found myself emotionally engaged in the story and may have even filled up a little bit as well towards the end, I guess that is one of the biggest compliments you can give a film?

It was nice though to see Gerard Butler reprising the same role he voiced in the animated film and quite frankly he just looks like he’s having a great time in each scene. Mason Thames was impressive in the leading role and engaging from start to finish. Working very well with Nico Parker. Nick Frost, Gabriel Howell, Julian Dennison, Browyn James and Harry Trevaldwyn all offer very good support in their roles.

This is well worth heading to the cinema to catch on the big screen!
