Superman (2025) Review

Superman must reconcile his alien Kryptonian heritage with his human uprbringing as reporter Clark Kent. He had always tried to protect people and do the right thing through truth and justice, but the world is about to turn on him.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We are thrown straight into the action within the opening scene as we see Superman struggling and out in the snow, with his trusty (maybe not) Superdog aka Krypto to help save him and get him to his home to recover. Then we are shown what had happened to get to that point and quite frankly that was a very refreshing opening as we already know the origin story, and have seen it all many times.

This therefore instantly made this film feel fresh and that we weren’t having to be told that same origin all over again, we had some small flashes within it but it wasn’t totally back to the beginning (again). Along with Superman/Clark Kent, Lois Lane and Lex Luther we also have a few other characters and in particular the “Justice Gang” with Green Lantern, Mister Terrific and Hawkgirl. The introduction of this group gave the film that more of a Marvel feel with the humour that came along, Green Lantern wasn’t the best (but I guess thats actually just the character), Hawkgirl had some horrendous screeches at times and Mister Terrific certainly lived up to his name, I think he was actually my favourite from the group.

It then combines how much of an impact public opinion can have and even Superman will feel that rath, despite always trying to help people and do the right thing. That is certainly what happens when it comes to any unrest and potential war, which is at the core of this story. Lex Luthor managing to create a pocket universe to hold his enemies is another aspect that threw in some interesting plot points.

I have to admit that I wasn’t really expecting much from this film and found myself pleasantly surprised with the outcome. I thought David Corenswet was fantastic as both Superman and Clark Kent, although he is mainly the man of steel in this outing. I felt as though he carried it all very well from start to finish. Rachel Brosnahan was decent as Lois Lane. Nicholas Hoult continues to grow with another excellent performance in another great role, did he really get to cry as Lex Luthor?

This is now interesting to see what happens next with Supergirl the next up from DC.
