I honestly am not even sure where to start with this film as it was certainly not what I was expecting at all. From that initial opening scene I realised that it was going to be a very strange film, and was quite frankly just that. Even though it does have dark comedy listed around the film, I didn’t really find much of it all that funny.
Obviously I get the different points and aspects that the film was attempting to highlight, but for me it was just put across in a very bizarre manner.
We mainly follow Bob and his daughter Willa who had made a sharp getaway when she was still a baby and her mother Perfidia had already decided to leave them, as quite frankly she cared more about the cause rather than her family. Her messed up relationship with Lockjaw would actually see everything crumble down.
Lockjaw was a truly awful character (although potrayed fantastically by Sean Penn, who went all in) and the “twist” was pretty obvious really, so that didn’t really add anything to the narrative of the film. Leonardo DiCaprio was decent as usual, does anyone else feel he is following Jack Nicholson in terms of his career choices?
The 2 hour 41 minute run time felt even longer for me, as I really do feel as though I have fully missed what everyone seems to be have taken from this film. The high ratings across different film sites really does surprise me. I will say though I wish it had more of Benicio Del Toro as as felt as though his character was interesting and his performance a scene-stealing one.
