Grace is a young first time mother, who used to be a writer and is slowly slipping into madness trying to deal with what her life has become constantly in the house and the strain this all has on the relationship with her husband Jackson.
⭐️⭐️
To begin with we are shown that Grace and Jackson have a rather healthy relationship when it comes to sex, moving into a new home together and everything looking as though it is going to work out well. She is then pregnant with their first child, and surely that means a nice family life?
Far from it, as with each day Grace seems to lose more of a grip on reality and finds herself in her own world. Jackson did not really seem to be very supportive at all, and we are given reason to believe that he is cheating on her. What really made me concerned was how often they would just leave the baby.
I found it very difficult to watch from start to finish and quite frankly just wanted it to be over. I actually struggled to cope and focus as a viewer with the constant noise, and that dog barking started to make me crazy! I guess that was the point to try and engross the viewer to feel like the characters?
The thing is though while I do not have any personal experience with this subject area, surely a film highlighting how bad postnatal depression can be should be able to educate? Without getting any actual answers on what was real, what was in her head and the order of events it just shows potential behaviour and symptoms but not how you could help. I just feel as though I still have no clue the impact it can have on women.
Jennifer Lawrence is utterly fantastic in each scene, she always goes all in for each role she takes on but that was not enough to make me like the film in any possible way. I wasn’t overly impressed with Robert Pattinson, I don’t think he really added anything. Sissy Spacek was good though, but didn’t really have a huge amount of screentime.
