When Ella McCay enters into a crazy week, she must attempt to balance everything in life while thinking about how events of her past have shaped the way she feels.
⭐️⭐️⭐️
We are told Ella’s story in a voiceover by Estelle who is her personal assistant and I felt as though that was a nice way to get to the know character with the flashback format to see the moments within her life that put her on the path she was now on.
Her father Eddie cheating on her mother Claire was not an aspect that she could easily let go, and was not willing to give him a second chance. Luckily she had her Aunt Helen, who quite frankly could be the greatest Aunt of all time. That was an aspect of the film which I just really loved.
We see how she must juggle the relationship with her husband Ryan, who was her high school sweetheart, and quite frankly he is just not all about her. He just focuses on himself, so basically she should have listened to Aunt Helen about him from the start, but everyone makes relationship mistakes don’t they!
Then we have her brother Casey who has a lot of issues going on as well, so trying to keep him going as her career has hit a new high when she becomes the new governor. Being in that position where she actually wanted to try and make a difference, it would not take long for her to find out that is not really that easy.
I wanted to love this film and had quite high expectations as you know James L. Brooks with his writing and directing double, but it fell a little short of the mark at times as it hit a bit of a lull during the second half. It does raise some interesting ideas around the choices we have in life and how key defining moments will shape how we feel about everything.
The standout for this film were the scenes between Emma Mackey and Jamie Lee Curtis, who were just outstanding together. I really enjoyed how that relationship worked and the screaming scene was a particular highlight.
