When Mike and Claire meet each other it is just meant to be, they had both been performing as tribute acts but then come up with the ultimate idea to be a Neil Diamond experience performing as Lightning and Thunder.

Song Sung Blue is a story that goes so much deeper than being about a Neil Diamond tribute act. It is a story of struggle and how when everything goes wrong you must not give up, and keep going even if that is painful and difficult.
When we first meet Mike he was at an AA meeting, and that is such a powerful opening for that character. It shows that he has been battling his demons for a very long time and he was reaching his sober birthday. What happens next is when refusing to perform at a gig, he meets Claire and they are both drawn to each other.
An idea is born when they decide to work together on a Neil Diamond act, but have it not so much as a tribute or trying to be Neil and more an experience with his songs. Supported by his close friends and somewhat management team in Mark, Dr Dave and Tom the unlikely group just seem to work. With it all we also get families merging together and that was actually a lovely little aspect of the story too.
Now I am going to fully admit that I thought this was going to be a nice happy film, with Neil Diamond songs throughout and in somewhat of maybe a tribute/musical type format. I was very wrong about that, this film hit some truly depressing moments and was quite frankly tragic. The music and act being at the core though gave everyone hope that things could be good again, maybe not instantly but eventually.
In terms of performances this is all about Kate Hudson, she is just wonderful and manages to bring about an all round performance. I could not help but think how much she is like her mother Goldie Hawn, her expressions and the way she sounded at times and I think that made me enjoy her performance even more. She is surely going to have awards buzz around for this right? Hugh Jackman, we really do know we will get consistency from him at this point and we do, I have to admit this is probably the least attractive I have ever found him. Hudson Hensley was a total scene stealer what a wonderful performance from the young actor.
