When Dr. Victor Frankenstein a scientist becomes consumed with his ideas and experiments he manages to bring a creature to life which would lead to his own demise, as only monsters play god.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Over the years we have witnessed many different versions and formats of Frankenstein, so I guess the majority of viewers will already have some idea of the story and how it potentially plays out.
This version goes all in with the gothic nature and that creates such an impressive world to witness the madness of Victor Frankenstein and his egotistical nature that would eventually bring him crashing down. His tragic creation which is certainly not the monster at all, but more misunderstood due to his appearance.
We are first told the story from Victor’s point of view, how his childhood and wanting to please his father was the main reason he ended up obsessed with doing something that had never been done before. An interesting aspect was seeing the nature of the experiment and watching as he attached the creature together, ensuring the nerves, ligaments, tendons, bones etc were all attached. For me that just gave it all an extra level of detail, if anyone is squeamish though they might not like that scene.
The build up to seeing The Creature and eventually seeing it from his point of view was a lovely touch and I felt as though Jacob Elordi gave such a film stealing performance. We were rooting for the Creature and wanted to see that he would be ok, but let’s face it the mashed up physical appearance due to how he was put together was always going to just scare people. We see him attempting to learn and become better in all possible ways.
Oscar Isaac was a great choice for the leading role as he really gets deeply into his characters and this was very pleasing to watch. Working very well with Eldori in many of the scenes. We have some good supporting performances from Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth and Charles Dance. Guillermo del Toro would always bring his own unique style to the story and I feel as though it worked out in the best possible way, keeping the dramatic nature of the origins with some visually stunning scenes and moments.
