Original Title – Eojjeolsuga eobsda

No Other Choice is a dark comedy, which pushes the boundaries from start to finish. We see a family who appear to have it all, but that doesn’t last long when Man-su loses his job. The downfall of him believing that he will get back on track and have another job within a couple of months does not go to plan at all.

He then develops his own plan, of pretending to have his own company so he can work out who his main competition is for any jobs that do come up. This began an extremely sadistic series of events, which quickly shows that when you believe it is your only option even killing someone will get easier.

The thing is though when we see the men he is targetting they are all actually struggling with the depression that had been triggered by being sacked from a job, so while he was going after them they actually should have been supporting one another through the worsr possible time. All had been very proud men who felt they were nothing without their job within the paper business.

Despite the constant support from his wife Mi-ri, it just wasn’t enough for him to actually feel like the man in the family anymore. He often found himself grappling with feelings of inadequacy and doubt, as the weight of his responsibilities seemed to overshadow the love and encouragement she provided. They also needed to focus on their children, Si-one and Ri-one, whose bright personalities and endless energy often pulled their attention in various directions. It was challenging to balance their parenting duties while maintaining a strong relationship as a couple. And can we also just take a moment to appreciate the quirky choice of names for their dogs, Si-two and Ri-two? I will admit it confused me a little at the start of the film, but it also added a touch of charm to their family dynamics, reflecting the playful yet chaotic nature of their lives together.
