Is This Thing On? (2025) Review

With their marriage unfolding Alex is facing middle age and divorce, wondering what to do next in his life he begins doing stand up comedy in New York City. While Tess his wife is confronting the sacrifices she makes for the family.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What else is a man going to do when his marriage has broken down, other than use the stories from it all on stage and building up a comedy act? The thing is though this is actuallly based on a true story of English comedian John Bishop and how he actually started his stand up journey.

It’s a very emotional journey with Alex as he must move into an apartment away from not only Tess but his two sons as well, who aren’t really sure how to deal with the family breaking apart. He is not sure how he is supposed to react and it makes for some truly heartbreaking moments, in particular when he is actually sat outside the family home and watching the bedroom window with the light on. Putting the stories and feelings into going on stage at open mic nights was certainly one way to try and deal with it.

Then we have Tess who has been struggling to work out what to do with her life, she had been a big volleyball player who competed at the Olympics. With the unhappiness within the marriage and just doing things for her sons and husband, she had reached breaking point. It has a very intimate look into relationships and just how easy it is for someone to hurt another person, even if they have been together for a very long time. The self discovery within the characters as they take a step away actually helps them realise that actually they can work through it all and be better for one another.

Performance wise this really is a very good one from Will Arnett who really takes on the lead in such a good manner, working very well opposite Laura Dern and the chemistry betwen the pair really does just work. We also get Bradley Cooper as director and also a small role which I thought was a rather amusing character.
