When Ryland Grace a science teacher wakes up alone on a spaceship we must follow his journey awaiting his memory to return, to find out how exactly he ended up out in space and the only one left alive!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The whole mission was mainly to stop a mysterious substance that had started to kill the Earth’s sun. This then leads to an unexpected and rather strange friendship with he discovers that actually we are not alone in the universe. We cannot help but become entralled with Grace’s battle to survive and complete the mission, even though that does mean not returning home.
As we are shown in flashbacks how he ended up in space, the journey he had been on and used for his knowledge around research he had completed before just ending up working as a science teacher in a school was quite interesting to see the way his life had changed. We do reach a point of seeing exactly how he ended up on the ship, but by that stage it wasn’t really a huge shock it had been built up for that moment.
We are shown the ruthless nature of people in general when the world could end, with Eva Stratt taking on that role and the placement of the song “Sign of the Times” on the karaoke was both hilarious and terrifying all at the same time! Those lyrics really hit hard in that scene, while keeping a truly hilarious tone as well because come on the mission!
Now, I never ever thought I would get emotionally attached to a rock like creature aka Rocky but here we are! That’s when you know it has been a very good story wrapped up into the film, when your emotions are actually hit by the film. The way in which Grace and Rocky managed to communicate and adapt for one another was certainly one of the best aspects of the film, demonstrating that actually we don’t need to be scared of or attack those who are different because quite frankly we might just have the same goals.
I had been really looking forward to seeing this film as I was a big fan of The Martian, and knowing it is based on a book by the same writer was certainly promising. Plus the added bonus of Ryan Gosling, who at this point can do no wrong at all for me with his role choices. Gosling managed to bring across his charisma in a film where the majority of the time he is also alone. Sandra Hüller has the crown for just being evil characters at this point, right? I mean I guess that is a compliment as she does it so very well.
