Friends is 30!

September 22nd 1994

That’s right, Joey cannot believe that Friends has turned 30 today! That’s right back on 22nd September 1994, Friends aired on TV for the very first time. I guess no-one had any idea that 30 years later and 20 years after ending that so much love would still be around for our six Friends.

I still find myself putting episodes on a few times per week as it is pretty much always on a channel somewhere! I am going to have a little celebration on Let’s Go To The Movies this week and have plenty of posts about my favourite episodes, moments and the best of each character.

It will come as no surprise that I do have plenty of Friends content on Let’s Go To The Movies as it has always been my favourite show, yes it does have some issues, as do the characters but quite frankly so does life and people in general!

Happy Friends is 30 Anniversary ❤️

Could VR Be the Solution to Future Home Cinema Experiences?

Virtual reality has been a mixed bag in reaching the potential it’s so broadly advertised. Some uses have constantly failed to deliver, but there are others where the technology offers hugely impressive solutions. Home cinema is one of these positive examples, providing an experience beyond what traditional at-home solutions can impart. There could be a real future here, and it might be closer than you think.

The VR Advantage

The biggest advantage of VR is also the most obvious one – it can completely fake anything in front of you. While these don’t cover your complete field of view, they have been expanding viewable areas as the generations advance. For reference, the original breakout VR device, the Oculus Rift, featured horizontal and vertical fields of views of 110 and 90 respectively. More modern systems like the Pimax Vision 5K Super, as noted at Tom’s Hardware, manage to hit 200 and 150 respective FOVs.

Though anything outside of this area might as well be blindered, anything within this space then emulated real space. This could start with simply browsing the internet on an enormous monitor, like checking out what’s available from an NJ casino app. Here your display could be the size of an entire wall, as you collect bonuses and promotions, play slots and table games, and otherwise enjoy what you would on a smaller screen on an enormous display.

In movies and TV, the advantages come from emulating screens of any size. This means your VR screen could dwarf anything measured in real life by the Guinness World Records, even if you have a wall three meters in front of you. From classic films in the Criterion Collection to the newest hits on digital, combining VR with quality headphones will be as close as many of us will come to owning a cinema of our own.

Not for Everyone

As great as this tech is, it’s still not a perfect solution for all users. Firstly, a VR headset is a personal system that is only good for one user at a time. This isn’t a problem if you love to watch alone, but it doesn’t exactly make for a great communal experience. VR can also be complicated to set up if you’re not technologically inclined.

Some users might also feel discomfort with VR, as it causes eye strain or nausea if used over long periods. These issues are being addressed with newer technology, but some might find the problems inescapable, especially if you suffer from poor eyesight. There’s also the immense challenge of eating popcorn while not being able to see what’s on your lap, an unforgivable roadblock for some enthusiasts.

For the right person with the right need (and the money to spend), VR headsets will become a perfect home cinema solution. The rest of us should also pay attention here, even if we’re not interested in other uses for VR systems. VR doesn’t just represent a small step in home entertainment, it’s an enormous leap that could fundamentally reshape how we engage with what we love.

The Most Popular Filming Locations in the World

While many filmmakers always strive for authenticity in their films, hard economic truths often mean that compromises have to be made. Filming locations are usually one of the first budgets to get chopped, meaning that productions usually end up heading to a few film-friendly locations. Here are just a few of the most popular.

Malta

Thanks to a dry environment and excellent coastal scenery, Malta has long been a stand-in for virtually any setting around the Mediterranean Sea. Claims to fame include use in epics such as Gladiator and Troy, as well as a surprisingly effective role as the city of Jerusalem in World War Z, thanks to Middle-Eastern architectural styles.

Beyond the location and financial incentives for productions, Malta has invested heavily in specialist filming facilities like the Malta Film Studios, home to some of the largest water tanks in the world. These massive tanks allow for both indoor and outdoor filming above and below the water in carefully controlled environments. They have been used for everything from coastal storms to submarine shots in one location.

Atlanta

The American city in the southern state of Georgia isn’t the first thought in most minds about picturesque filming locations, but as a cityscape, it is incredibly popular. It has served as a backdrop for everything from blockbuster projects like Baby Driver to smaller recent projects that use winning the lottery as a plot hook in film and TV, like the recent Jerry & Marge Go Large.

What makes Atlanta attractive for filmmakers is partly its ability to stand in for major cities in areas like California but with a lower price for filming locations, amenities and all the other costs that come along with a production. There is also a healthy tax break incentive within the city, so financially it makes a lot of sense as a filming location.

Ireland

Another country with a tax credit incentive for filmmakers, this one at a hefty 32%, Ireland is also popular as a stand-in for all kinds of movies. Unlike the examples above, the Irish landscape is a lot more flexible in what it can represent. It was famously used for large parts of the Scottish highland scenes in Braveheart, has an iconic scene in the more recent Star Wars films, and even served as France in Saving Private Ryan.

What separates Ireland is how strong the local movie industry has become, with a large number of Irish stories reaching the silver screen over the years. Big productions like The Wind That Shakes the Barley have been noteworthy, while recent films like Belfast have even claimed some Academy Award glory. In turn, it means there’s a lot of interest in films in general in the country, making extras a lot easier to come by than elsewhere.

While film location can be limited by money, it’s important to remember that each location also has benefits of its own. Keep this in mind if you’re looking to direct!
