This is Let’s Go To The Movies first attempt of hosting a blogathon! Which hasn’t worked out too well with the timing of it all, having been in South Africa for 10 days last week! This did however mean a very long trip on a plane and plenty of films watched and caught up with. But also meant I didn’t have time to send out any updates and see if anyone else wanted to take part in the Hometown Blogathon, so basically if you would like to submit your town at any point over the next week then feel free to put a post together!

Let’s Go To The Movies would like to announce hosting its first ever Blogathon. Which is going to be based around everyone’s hometown. The idea is to do a little bit of research to put together a blog post about your hometown and link it to film. It doesn’t matter if another blogger is from the same town as the blog posts could take totally different angles on it. You are more than welcome to do more than one town if you have moved around and class a few different places as your home.
Some areas you may want to include:
Films set in that town
Films filmed in your town
Famous people in film born in your town
Famous people in film who grew up in your town
Famous people in film who now live in your town
While I have said film, you can also link to TV shows, Theatre and books if you want to take that angle. I know the blogging network is very large and want to encourage maximum participation in this blogathon!
If you can look to have the posts up by the weekend – 22nd and 23rd November this gives everyone plenty of time to put something together!
Today marks the 50th Anniversary of the death of Marilyn Monroe, you wouldn’t think that it had been that long as she is still very much in everyone’s lives. She is constantly referenced in songs and films, a lot of her films are classics and still shown on TV. She was without a doubt one of a kind and I find her fascinating, amazing and incredible. She played the dumb blonde role on so many occasions but was far from that! She was so much more and that is why I love her!
No story is more tragic than the life Marilyn had, it was never easy but she just seemed to get on with it. She was full of controversy even after her death rumours spread which she was not able to deny, I always find that terrible as it seemed as though people would not let her rest in peace. Let’s face it she was just a girl who wanted to be loved and be happy, and who doesn’t want that?
Blood Brothers
Having been to see this musical at the theatre earlier this year, I was very happy to hear the song titled ‘Marilyn Monroe’ as she really played a massive part in describing the story in the show. I hadn’t really heard much of the music before hand but really loved the tribute to Marilyn in the song. Which is reprise three times throughout, with slightly different lyrics but all mean so much.

An amazing tribute song to such an idol, I really love how they have a few quotes in and address how difficult life must have been for Marilyn. Inspiring us that if she could do it so can we. So even in 2012 the 50th year since her untimely death tributes are being paid in song to the fabulous actress.
The film based on a book and brought to the big screen with Michelle Williams putting in a brilliant performance as Monroe which really was captivating from start to finish. Just showing that she is still very much capable of being the main focus in a film, baring in mind this film is based on the making of another film! Which does not happen very often at all.
Smash (2012) TV Show
Premiered this year, it’s about a production of a Broadway show based on Marilyn’s life. This just shows that Monroe is still well thought about 50 years after her death, just backing up my thoughts on this blog post. The TV series has been a massive hit in the US and I am watching from the UK on Sky Atlantic. Hopefully a lot of people are really appreciating this well thought about TV series which just shows what it’s like behind the scenes on Broadway. One thing is for sure I really want to see this musical about Marilyn, such a shame it is just a TV show.
So even in 2012 which marks the 50th year since Marilyn’s death she is a the main subject of a TV show and in song lyrics and has songs about her. She is still one of the biggest stars, even with her tragic untimely death. I really do think it is such a sad story as all she ever wanted was to be loved and happy. Her legacy will forever live on, as will her very famous quotes about pretty much everything. But it always seemed to go back to love and men. “It’s not true I had nothing on, I had the radio on” – one of my personal favorites. She always seemed to have such a good sense of humour even if people were trying to trap her. Saying the unexpected she really was something else. Another who appeared to be too far ahead of her time and wanting to be equal but will rather old-fashioned values as well.
I still have a few of her films which I have not seen yet and are on my must see lists! I really do want to see everything Marilyn made and enjoy each and every one of her films. The one’s I have seen are just fantastic I am sure I won’t be disappointed in the rest.

It has been announced this morning that Jane Russell passed away yesterday. A very well-known actress from the 1940s/1950s. Her most well-known performance has to come in ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ which she starred alongside Marilyn Monroe. Then a follow-up to that film ‘Gentlemen Marry Brunettes’.
Catherine Zeta Jones attended Buckingham Palace a few days ago to receive her CBE (Commander of the British Empire) from Prince Charles. This was for her services to the film industry and charity. Very happy to see one of my favorite actresses honoured!
I have grown to enjoy the Golden Globes over the past few years, possibly even more than Oscars. They seem to be more relaxed and fun. Everyone seems to have a good time. This year the big talking point fell around Ricky Gervais who was hosting, some of his jokes not going down very well with the audience. This then lead to him disappearing for more than an hour from the ceremony, leading to talk that he was stopped from coming on to deliver monologue.
So the talk surrounding the Globes is that Gervais will not be asked to host the show for the third time in a row. I personally found his jokes to be rather amusing and I am not usually a massive fan of his. But I guess for the American audience Gervais’ still was a bit extreme. Best moment had to be introducing Bruce Willis as Ashton Kutcher’s dad!
My favorite speech had to be from Robert De Niro when he picked up the Cecil B. DeMille Award (lifetime achievement). He managed to mix thanking people, talking about his career with a very heart warming feel and jokes put in to even it all out. He really is something else!
Colin Firth continued his collection of awards for his performance in “The King’s Speech” and looks almost certain to pick up the Oscar next month. His speech was also just fantastic, being very funny as well. It really is brilliant to see Colin getting the recognition that he so rightly deserves.
My favorite moment had to come from Michael Douglas appearing on stage to present the Best Film (Drama) award. He received a standing ovation from everyone in the room and responded with “there has to be an easier way to get a standing ovation”. It was brilliant to see him on a stage a few days after being given the all clear from his cancer battle. Definetly the most tear jerking moment in the whole ceremony. An icon to all!
Mae West has often been described as one of the more controversial movie stars of her day, West encountered many problems including censorship. This brings me to the main point in this blog post about an incredible actress and performer who was so obviously well before her time, in terms of the roles she was playing. Her characters did not play second best to men, and some of the lines she was given are still fantastic quotes to this day. She really was just incredible. When you put everything into context based on the way life was back in the day when West was delivering these controversial lines it really must have been quite shocking at the time! A lot of these lines would still be brilliant if thought up today.
After the recent allegations that the most recent best actress Oscar winner Sandra Bullock’s husband Jesse James cheated on her. It got me thinking about the previous best actress winners and there relationships especially after Kate Winslet announcing her spilt from husband Sam Mendes earlier this week. Hilary Swank split from Chad Lowe not too long after she picked up her second best actress statue. So can men really not handle it if there wife is more successful than them or is it all just a coincidence?
The old-fashioned values and usual relationship rules are that the man is classed as the main earner and “looks” after his wife and children. But in Hollywood that is not often the case when a woman can easily be more successful than her husband. So lets venture down the road of successful actresses and have a comparison with relationships she has had, especially before and even after winning the highest accolade of an Oscar.
Oscar-winning couple of actress Kate Winslet and director Sam Mendes have today announced that they are splitting up and planning on getting a divorce. I was rather shocked by this but thinking back to the Oscars Sam was not with Kate. Are they another couple to fall to the 7 year itch?
I am a big fan of Kate and thought it looked like her and Sam were together for the long haul, the way they spoke about each other when they worked together on Revolutionary Road. They always appeared strong as a couple. But I guess we never know what goes on behind closed doors.
