During the Civil Rights movement in the 1960s aspiring writer Skeeter Phelan decides to write a book on the experiences of black women working as maids in Mississippi. In the process of doing this she risks losing all of her friends and family.
Recently divorced Emma heads to a new place for a new life with her teenage son. Everything is quickly turned upside down when she meets Murphy who owns the local drugstore and seems to have quite a say in the town.
Jane (Heigl) has been a bridesmaid 27 times and never close to being the bride. She is secretly in love with her boss Geroge (Burns). When her sister Tess (Akerman) shows up and ends up on the fast track to marrying George she cannot bear to stand by her side. Kevin (Marsden) is a reporter who writes about weddings and ends up writing a story about Jane.
