Top 10 – Christmas Movies

As it is Christmas Eve today, I thought the best way to celebrate Christmas on the blog would be to do my top 10 Christmas Movies. The one’s I have grew up watching (and loving) and even more recent films will appear too. As over the past few years some very good Christmas films have been released. The best thing about Christmas films is that you are really restricted to watching them in Decemeber. I mean if you really want to you could watch them in July . . . but that’s just not the same at all! So quite a few films in my collection are only watched at this time of year.

What makes a good Christmas movie then? Well I would say it has to be a very Christmasy message usually involving or revolving around family. Most of the better ones also have the Santa factor too!

Batman 3 – Return of the Riddler?

The third installment of Christopher Nolan’s Batman franchise really is going to have a massive following and build up after the success of Batman Begins and then The Dark Knight in recreating the Batman series the third installment which is currently slated for a 2012 release, has been creating press since The Dark Knight’s credits rolled. Heath Ledger’s death which occurred before the release of The Dark Knight, the ending which had us wondering The Joker’s fate, yet we knew we would never see the character in that form again. A sad moment for so many reasons, Ledger’s Joker gained an Oscar and so much critical acclaim and was definitely one of performances of the decade if not all time. This has then all raised the very good question of which villain shall be making an appearance in this third film in the series. Apparently the answer to that question is THE RIDDLER.

The Riddler was last seen in Batman Forever portrayed by Jim Carrey, in a fun crazy way. Very light and comic book like, seemed as though he came straight from the pages of the comics these films are based on. I can’t deny that I have always loved Jim Carrey’s Riddler for the age I was when Batman Forever was released and class that film as a very guilty pleasure now. But we have already witness that Nolan’s Batman films aren’t like anything we have ever seen before, they are darker and not going for obvious laughs in a fun way. They are more serious and after what he did with The Joker, we can only begin to imagine how sinister and evil he could make The Riddler.

Desert Island DVDs

Whilst trying to decide which films to include, I decided the biggest factor had to be if your able to watch it over and over again. I mean your only going to have 8 DVDs to chose from. Pointless having DVDs in there if you could not watch them over and over.

In putting together my list they had to have a good story, acting and interesting characters who you could either relate to or are very likeable.

My initial idea was to narrow it down towards the 8 films by separating the films into different genres. Then attempting to have at least one from each genre, giving a wider variety of film choice. But I am not entirely sure that actually happened when I look at my finished list.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

  • Thought provoking and complex with a very interesting concept.
  • Brilliant performances from Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey
  • Has to be watched many times for you to really notice a lot of things in it.

  • You must look closer at everything.
  • Brilliant performances from all members of the cast, who work so well together.
  • How midlife crisis can go
  • You will never look at a plastic bag blowing in the wind in the same way again!

  • The love story, between Maria and the Captain.
  • This is the film I watch when I feel a little down or ill, as it makes me smile.
  • Julie Andrews being just amazing
  • Heartwarming

The Dark Knight

  • Amazing performances and storyline
  • I saw it 3 times at the cinema (holding the record for most cinema viewings for a film)
  • The Joker & Batman
  • Thought provoking in the sense of terrorism
  • Amazing Batman installment

Million Dollar Baby

  • I tried to resist all temptation of including my favorite film in this list, but the pressure got to me and I decided to include it.
  • Amazing performances and a storyline which really got to me.
  • The score by Clint Eastwood is just brilliant
  • The trio of Swank/Eastwood/Freeman

As Good As It Gets

  • Jack Nicholson at his very best in a best actor winning role.

A Christmas Carol (2009) Review

Charles Dicken’s classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge is given an animated Disney look, and if you so wish 3D (2D is still available). I just had to go for the 3D option in an attempt to try to make my mind up whether I like it better or not. Scrooge is taken on a journey of redemption by three ghosts, the ghost of Christmas past, present and future. Going  back looking at his life as it was, how it is today and how it will not be for very much longer. But can he be convinced to change his ways?

3D Movies

3D seems to very much be the in thing at the movies at the moment. 2010 is scheduled to be jam-packed with plenty of 3D action, and still a few more to come over the rest couple of months in 2009.

Just had “The Final Destination” which was the first 3D movie I have seen at the cinema. The only reason I went to see it was because it was in 3D to be completely honest. I wonder how many more people took this approach?

In the UK we still have a film I am very much looking forward to opening next month “Up”. A new Pixar/Disney film, so it is very much on my really want to see list.

Also this Friday we have the release of the original “Toy Story” in 3D which is going to be just fantastic. As I already love it and it can only get better in 3D. Toy Story 2 is also due for release.

Then as a special Christmas treat we have Disney’s Christmas Carol, which I think just looks fantastic. Got to love Jim Carrey even if it is just his voice.

Also around Christmas time we have “Avatar” which does look very cool, as I saw the trailer for it in 3D while seeing The Final Destination. So for the rest of this year we do have a few 3D movies to really look forward too.

2010

So far for next year we have seven 3D films to look forward too. Beauty and the Beast in 3D, Alice in Wonderland (which I have to admit that I had no idea would be in 3d, but I am now more excited for this film), Shrek Forever After, How To Train Your Dragon, Hubble, Tron Legacy and Toy Story 3.

I think for 2010, I am most looking forward to Toy Story 3 and Alice in Wonderland.

What are everyone’s thoughts on 3D movies?
