From Stage to Screen Blogathon – Everything I’ve Seen

When I came across this fantastic Blogathon idea by Rachel over at Rachel’s Theatre Reviews and Rosie over at The Rosebud Cinema. It was something that I just had to get involved with, because as well as loving the cinema and films I have a passion for the theatre and seeing shows. This is something which I have now properly been doing for the past 10 years, yes realising that has made me stop and think, so it seems to be a perfect time to put together this blog post. I am going to look at all of the different shows I have seen on the stage and then also seen the film version.

My Musicals Obsession

If you follow my blog or have come across it before you will know that I really do love musicals and have quite an obsession with them. This blog post is inspired by the latest release of Les Mis. I saw it at the cinema on Friday night and since Saturday morning I have listened to the soundtrack over and over again, think I’m up to my 10th listen now and I am going to see the film again at the cinema tomorrow night.  This then got me thinking to how much I obsess over movie musicals! I mean I loved The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins growing up but my big musical obsession really started with Chicago, yes 10 years ago now. I actually watched it over and over again, you know the times when it finishes and then you just watch it from the start again. I loved everything about it (and still love it) I know every single word of it and have now since it 3 times on the stage as well.

Celebrate the Movies

In a build up to this year’s Oscars they have released images celebrating the movies which have let a lasting impression, telling us what we learnt from that particular film. Obviously most of these films are previous Oscar winners, some of which are my favorite films.

Day 9 – favorite musical

This one actually works out tougher than I first thought as it means I have to choose between Chicago and The Sound of Music! Both of which are in my all time favorite film lists! So I am going to cheat and pick both of them as my favorite musical. I just cannot choose between My Favorite Things and All That Jazz. They are both my most watched films, as I have seen them probably hundreds of times each. Ok maybe a slight exaggeration, but probably not far off for The Sound of Music having watched it over and over from a very young age.

The power of musicals for me make you happy when you are feeling a bit down. The Sound of Music has always been my feel good film, never-failing to make me smile. Chicago is such a sexy musical with some fantastic songs that you cannot help but to sing along too!

Top 10: Movie Characters I Would Like To Be For The Day

Well I stumbled across a post on My Filmviews blog titled Which Movie Character Would You Like To Be For The Day and decided to follow suit and complete my top 10 of movie characters I would like to be for the day. Putting this list together didn’t really take too long at all. Especially as most of the characters come from my favorite films.

I tried not to be shallow and pick characters based on their leading man . . . but I think that failed with some of the choices but I mean that had to be a coincident. I honestly didn’t do it on purpose! Yes a few of them are musical characters, maybe that’s because I am tone-deaf!

45 Years of the Sound of Music!

The hills are alive with the sound of music, with songs they have sung for 45 years . . . yes that’s right one of the most loved and well-known films of all time is 45 years young. To celebrate that another special DVD is being released along with the a Blu Ray Disc release! (Yes I shall be purchasing that one sometime soon).

Oprah reunited the cast for the first time since the film came out and it really shows just how special it is. It feels good to see the Von Trapp family all together again. I am not afraid to admit that “The Sound of Music” has always been and will always be one of my favorite ever films. It’s one of my feel good films that really helps me when I feel down.

I’ve watched it from since I can remember and know all of the words off by heart . . . that’s the dialogue as well as the songs. Julie Andrews is just incredible and I cannot believe if people have not seen this film! I just think it really does have a bit of everything. It even makes me cry with the romance between Maria and the Captain.

Musical Moments

Each Monday (hopefully) a song or part from a movie musical will be blogged about. This may vary from a scene, a musical number, facts about the musical as a whole or just general chat about the musical. Occasionally comparisons maybe made between the stage show and movie version.

If you have read my blog for any length of time this will all probably come as no surprise to you and you will already know that I am a total musicals geek! I figured it would be good for me to write more about different aspects of musicals and have been trying to figure out a way to do that for quite some time now. I think this musical moments feature on a Monday is certainly the way forward for me to spend some time writing about musicals.

I know the musical genre is often only enjoyed by a select few, everyone still seems to have one musical that they actually quite like (even if they struggle to admit it). So hopefully this feature will at some point have something for everyone in the different movies that will come up! It may even encourage people to watch more musicals.

If you want something from a movie musical to be included in the feature at some point please feel free to ask!

Meme: 10 Movie Facts About Me

Well the newest craze hitting the blogosphere has been 10 movie facts about me a meme. Andy from Fandango Groovers so kindly tagged me to post 10 movie facts. Love it! This will all be off the top of my head, so I have no idea which direction it will head in (if any). Big shout out to who originally started this post, we really are feeling the love in the movie blogging world over the past few weeks and I think it really is just brilliant.

1. I am a total geek when it comes to going to the cinema, as I keep the tickets from every film I go to see. This helps when myself and friends argue about the last film we saw in a certain screen (from 1-11 in our local cinema).

2. The first film I ever saw at the cinema was Aladdin which would have made me 4 or 5 (depending on UK release date) and I am pretty sure I went to see it twice.

3. I can remember a hell of a lot of film quotes and find myself telling them to people in certain situations, often to help them feel better.

4. I have hundreds and hundreds of DVDs. Some of which have been watched lots and lots of times (Lord of the Rings, Julia Roberts films . . . ) and some have been watched once (Hope Springs is one I can think of off the top of my head) and about 25 have never been watched and on my must watch list.

5. I am extremely pleased that I suddenly decided to start this blog one day as it has allowed me to meet a lot of interesting people through there blogs, getting involved in blogging events and encouraging me to really think about some films whilst writing reviews and even paying closer attention when watching them. To say the least it has become somewhat a hobby.

6. Every now and then I have an actor of the moment which causes me to dive into their past work, often buying more DVDs. Over the years this has happened with Richard Gere, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and most recently Daniel Craig (thank you Casino Royale !!!).

7. My feel good, never fails to put a smile on my face movie is “The Sound of Music” possibly my most watched film EVER. As I grew up watching it and still love it to this day. I always thought Julie Andrews was the most perfect speaking woman.

8. I have a Cineworld cinema pass which I think is the best 13.50 a month to come out of my bank account! Unlimited cinema for that much a month really is something else. I do my best to go twice a week maybe more if loads of different films are out.

9. As I have probably mentioned before I never read a review before I see the film. The furthest I will go when reading a paper with a review in is looking to see how many stars they gave the review – as this doesn’t often make it very obvious how the film goes. But after I have seen a film and wrote my review, I will then read what other people thought of the film.

10. My friends and family often ask me if I have seen certain films and what I thought of them. It’s not very often I actually tell people a film is bad unless I wanted to turn it off or leave the cinema. I don’t often do that because I find that everyone has different opinions so something I hate they may love and vice versa.

Well there we go 10 random movie facts about me!!!

Desert Island DVDs

Whilst trying to decide which films to include, I decided the biggest factor had to be if your able to watch it over and over again. I mean your only going to have 8 DVDs to chose from. Pointless having DVDs in there if you could not watch them over and over.

In putting together my list they had to have a good story, acting and interesting characters who you could either relate to or are very likeable.

My initial idea was to narrow it down towards the 8 films by separating the films into different genres. Then attempting to have at least one from each genre, giving a wider variety of film choice. But I am not entirely sure that actually happened when I look at my finished list.
