Three unknowing martial artists are summoned to a mysterious island to compete in a tournament whose outcome will decide the fate of the world.
Being a total 90’s kid, I loved this film due to my love for the video game we used to play on the Sega Mega Drive. Having re-watched this film over the past couple of days thanks to the watch it now on LOVEFiLM it was a nice blast from the past and allowed me to realise how far films have come in terms of special affects.
The story-line is pretty simple really Johnny Cage, Liu Kang and Sonya Blade must save the world by fighting in Mortal Kombat. Fighting to the death of course, with Shang Tsung stealing the souls of the defeated fighters. We have constant links to the very popular video game throughout, in particular “finish him” which related to completing your finishing move to win the fight. Thought it was quite funny to still remember that after all of these years.
Watching this film really did make me want to play on Mortal Kombat again, such a shame I haven’t had my Mega Drive for years now. Such a classic game!
The film has it’s funny moments and some good fighting scenes, with the martial arts element still looking pretty good to this day. I always was a big fan of Sonya and used to be that character constantly whilst playing the game too. Got to love a kick-ass female showing the men how it’s all done.
They also try to have a couple of love stories in the film, but neither really progress. Just more mentioned and implied instead of really shown in great depth.
I found it very nice to revisit this film after so long, especially as it was so unexpected finding it on LOVEFiLM and available to watch instantly.
