Don’t Look Now (1973) Review

Laura and John Baxter are a married couple who are grieving the death of their young daughter Catherine after a tragic accident are in Venice when they encounter a very strange pair of elderly sisters with one claiming to be psychic and brings a warning from the beyond!

⭐️⭐️⭐️

The opening scene of Don’t Look Now is extremely tragic as we witness the death of Catherine, as she drowns. With John rushing to try and save his young daughter and when Laura realises what has happened. It certainly does not make for easy viewing and quite frankly I had no idea which direction the film was going in from that moment on. Although I don’t really think I could have guessed the strange turns it would then take.

Meeting the strange sisters in Venice and the supposed psychic visions with Catherine communicating was just downright bizarre. Especially as this was something that Laura could not get past and would actively seek out the sisters for more information truly believing that her daughter could be seen again. It has jumpy moments that are creepy but it is bizarre overall really.

I guess it could give people hope if they had suffered the greatest loss a parent can go through. I will admit though that the main reason for picking to watch this film was having Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie in the leading roles and quite frankly they did not disappoint in what was an emotional journey for the characters they were portraying. The creepy nature wasn’t exactly constantly jumpy but it had moments that were quite frankly bizarre and I guess that made for entertainment and a watchable film, albeit dated.
