Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) Review

Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne team up with her parents Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne as they explore the Quantum Realm. A place that Cassie Lang had been learning about and they are all then stuck inside it, another world with many different creatures.

⭐️⭐️

Firstly I feel that I must state that I am a massive fan of the Ant-Man films so far and especially Ant-Man and the Wasp, which I have watched many times since the cinema release. So I was massively looking forward to this next outing of Scott Lang as let’s face it he is such a cool and normal guy who you cannot help but like and want to see him succeed.

When they saved Janet from the Quantum Realm she had not actually told them everything that had happened to her during the 30 years she spent trying to get back home and more importantly survive with the many different creatures and beings. It might have been rather helpful if she had mentioned Kang, who was an exiled traveler and with good reason he destroyed worlds.

Scott had written a book and was now living a rather celebrity life, well in his head he was at least when people get him confused for the other Avengers/Superheroes. He seems happy enough though and with all of this he has failed to notice that his daughter Cassie was getting involved with the Quantum Realm and even developing a way to establish contact through a device she has built. This was done alongside Hank Pym who was still obsessed with it all.

Naturally they were all going to end up trapped in the Realm and it was not going to be easy at all for them to get out, because that was just the way it was all going to go! It felt as though it could have been the Ant-Man journey of Doctor Strange and the Multiverse. Unfortunately though it doesn’t really work out that way. At times it just felt like a Star Wars film with the different characters that were popping up and the strange things as well and for me it just didn’t work overall for the film. Kang was quite an underwhelming bad guy and fell rather flat. Darren, the big floating head was a little bit amusing right?

I was probably left more disappointed than anything else and wanted to like the film, but at times I was just too bored to then actually care which was such a shame really. The cast give it everything though and I have to admit that I am still so buzzing that Michael Douglas is involved in the Marvel Universe, and he is truly brilliant as Hank Pym he was also given a few amazing moments in the film that made me smile so much! Paul Rudd, as always was an utter joy and I will watch him in any film, tv show or anything he is that good. Kathryn Newton was very promising as Cassie.

  1. Yeah, this film was a let down. I was entertained by it with Michelle Pfeiffer and Jonathan Majors really standing out for me. Having seen it this past Sunday and having more time to think about it. I think putting Kang in this film was the wrong choice as the previous Ant-Man films never took themselves seriously as there was this great mix of humor, action, suspense, and drama as those 2 films were co-written with Paul Rudd and multiple writer that somehow managed to make it work. This film had one writer in Jeff Loveness and… I hope he never writes for Marvel ever again. The lack of humor got to me as I missed Luis, Kurt, Dave, Cassie’s mom, and her stepdad as those were characters I love. Plus, I think the film was unsure what it wanted to be as it was uninspiring at times.

I think Marvel needs to take a year off every once in a while between Phases to take more time to figure out what to do next and develop projects while giving audiences a chance to take a break from that world.

    1. So pleased that you agree with my review and felt the same way about parts of it. Michelle Pfeiffer was great and I now realise that I totally didn’t mention her in the review but that is probably because she is always great!
