Genie (2023) Review

When Bernard is about to lose everything due to his workoholic nature, he must enlist the help of a magical genie named Flora to help win his family back before Christmas.

⭐️⭐️

Bernard had become a man obsessed with his job and quite frankly ended up neglecting the relationship with his wife Julie and daughter Eve. Although it does then make you wonder just how people strike up a balance between work and life. As at times I didn’t actually feel as though Julie was actually being fair on Bernard who was providing for his family afterall.

Everything was about to be turned into a crazy world for him when Flora the Genie was about to flip everything into turmoil. Granting him different wishes and making his life that little bit easier and better. I guess if we could have what we want in that sense everything would be easier!

I felt as though this film had a strange approach and might have actually been a little bit better if it had gone all in on the Cheesy Christmas Film genre but it tried to stay out of that but was dragged in a little towards the end. We all know that Melissa McCarthy can be very hit miss in films and quite frankly she does the best she can with this one and probably was the highlight of the film. Everything else felt so fake and false which was a shame, but surely a few wishes shouldn’t be enough to save a doomed relationship? That was my feeling towards it anyway, not an easy decision that you can just suddenly change.

Given that Richard Curtis wrote the screenplay I really did have higher hopes for Genie, and was left very disappointed with the outcome which was a massive shame really.
