As it turned out 2023 was a rather good year for film, that including cinema releases and films that might have just gone straight to streaming services, although we have hit a time where the turnaround for some films from cinema to streaming services is not long at all. With some films given an advanced release at the cinema, which I am guessing is for people like me who still prefer to see films on that lovely big screen!
The following films made my longlist but not quite into the final ten, this was obviously quite a tough year to decide on: Wonka, One Life, Leave the World Behind, The Great Escaper, Totally Killer, Guardian’s of the Galaxy Vol.3, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, Rye Lane and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Now check out which ten films did make the top ten in this years Let’s Go To The Movies Best Films list …

Yes a terrific year for film and you have a great list to be sure…with one exception but we all have our own tastes…as for “Air”, I loved it and was a bit surprised it hasn’t been mentioned by many…as for best of the year, both “Saltburn” and “Poor Things” were the most provocative, but I still need to see two more to truly have a list – as two I still haven’t seen are winning lots of awards!
I haven’t seen Poor Things yet, the U.K. release date is late for that one.
There are still a number of movies I haven’t been able to see yet, but right now my top 5 are The Holdovers, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret., Past Lives, and Nimona.
Oh I haven’t seen The Holdovers or Nimona, so considering I really liked the other three you’ve listed I will certainly try and watch them both.
Definitely a great year and your list is impressive. I agree about Blackberry though it does not make my top 20 (based on UK releases):
1 Past Lives
2 Oppenheimer
3 Anatomy of a Fall
4 The Old Oak
5 You Hurt My Feelings
6 Empire of Light
7 Tar
8 Master Gardener
9 Blue Jean
10 Fremont
11 The Night of the 12th
12 La Syndicaliste
13 Full Time
14 Reality
15 Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One
16 Killers of the Flower Moon
17 Rye Lane
18 How to Blow Up a Pipeline
19 1976
20 Scrapper
I haven’t seen 12 of the films you’ve put in your 20, so I certainly have some catching up to do! Nice to see Scrapper on your list though, I thought that was quite underrated.
