The Cut (2024) Review

When a retired boxer decides to return to the ring for one last shot at the title, it all depends if he can actually make the weight. A massive cut will be needed and what will unfold shows the dark side of illegal methods to do so …

⭐️⭐️⭐️

To begin with the film looks as though it is going to be your standard underdog boxing/sport film. An older athlete, who is retired given one more chance at the big time. Although this quickly spins into something else completely, a very extreme look into methods on how to cut weight.

The drive to have one final shot is something that would then consume him, despite what was happening not being legal or even safe in terms of actual health. I honestly ended up at the point of wondering even if he did drop the weight who he would manage to box, when he could not even stand up!

This film ends up falling into a slight psychological in terms of sports films, at times it reminded me of some films based on cheating in terms of doping within sports. As it touches more on that rather than hard work, training and determination. It’s actually brutal to watch and all I could really hope was that it was a massive extreme to anything people actually still manage to get away with in sport.

Orlando Bloom went all in for this performance, it certainly is not a sequel to The Calcium Kid. I hope I am not one of the only people to actually have seen that film, or even remember it (yes I am a lifelong fan). In terms of literally putting his body on the line he lost 23.5kg/52 pounds in three months to prepare for the role, which let’s face it is rather crazy!
