When a group of young misfits who call themselves The Goonies discover an ancient map they set out on an adventure to try and find the long lost treasure, but this will bring them into quite a lot of danger.

In what is regarded as a highly rated film, especially if you think about the coming of age genre that is so often discussed this is one of those leading within that. While I have seen this before, it actually got me thinking that during different decades and in particular the 80s that kids had more freedom to explore and wanted to be outside!
The adventure really started with Mikey not wanting to accept that his family were going to have to move out of their home, thinking about how much he would miss his friends. Along with his older brother Brand, they start this quest with Chunk, Mouth and Data making up the group. Throwing in Alex and Stef who they meet along the way.
An aspect they couldn’t have envisioned was the Fratelli’s a dangerous family with Jake who had just broken out of prison being in the way. This certainly added more danger to the situation and creates some rather interesting scenes. Jake and Francis brothers who are controlled still by their mother, not forgetting Sloth!
Each step as the group feels like a lovely journey and it makes it such an easy film to watch and enjoy. It is understandable how it is still held in such high regard, as it turned 40 years old this year!
It’s pretty incredible that this is the only feature film that Jeff Cohen appeared in as he is brilliant as Chunk! Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman and Ke Huy Quan make up the rest of the Goonies and they are all so good as each character. Looking at it now really helps to show just how far some of the young actors then went in film and television and quite frankly are still going!
This is a great movie. I went to see it when I was 17 and it really hit home because yes those were the days that packs of us boys were feral. Locked out of the house with a bicycle and a ball we had to entertain ourselves and survive off a sack lunch and drinking from the nearest water hose, creek, or pond. The only limitation was we weren’t allowed to shoot each other with “real guns” or make anything that explodes “too big”. The Goonies made real what was running through our imaginations.
