A loner of a fisherwoman has grown tired of the rest of the villagers attitude towards her, so she gets the basketmaker to weave her a husband. This arrival causes a lot of jealousy and upheaval throughout the whole village.

Wicker is a rather strange dark comedy which is an attempt to be an adult themed fairy tale, and despite the very positive reviews I felt as though it didn’t quit hit any sort of height for me. It struggled to recovery from the very slow and boring first twenty minutes.

Each character throughout the film is known as their profession and that takes a little bit of time to get used to, and remember that those are just then the characters names. When a woman is married she just becomes the wife of that profession. It is based on a short story ‘The Wicker Husband’ by Ursula Wills.

Sometimes when you have heard positive buzz around a film it does raise expectations to a higher level and I fear that had an impact on my viewing of this one. Although I cannot really understand why people are getting over excited with the sex scenes, seriously nothing special or spectacular at all. (The film being released in 4DX is a little bizarre mind!)

For a brief period during the middle segment of the film I did find myself enjoying that, when it was demonstrating just how much jealousy can impact a community. Small changes making people doubt everything about their own relationships and want more from them. This was even evident with the fisherwoman who could not accept that her Wicker husband only wanted her, despite that being the reason he was made.

Performance wise Olivia Colman never disappoints, she just goes from strength to strength and quite frankly she is probably the only actor I could think of in that role. Elizabeth Debicki gave a stand out performance though as I felt she stole each scene she as in. Peter Dinklage offered good support in a smaller role. Nice little cameo from Richard E. Grant. Then finally how is it even possible for Alexander Skarsgård still managing to look hot whilst made of wicker was rather impressive.
