Three Features, One Film-Filled Week!

Following the recent changes to Let’s Go To The Movies, I’ve been thinking about how to bring a little more structure to the features alongside my film reviews.

There are so many performances, songs and scenes I want to write about, and this feels like a good way to give them their own space. Some familiar features will be returning more regularly, alongside a new addition for Sundays!

The idea? One actor, three different ways to explore their films.

Monday: Musical Moments

Musical Moments is already part of the blog, and I’m looking forward to making it a regular Monday feature again.

It might be a big number from a musical, a character singing unexpectedly, or a song that makes a scene unforgettable. Sometimes the actor will be performing; sometimes their reaction to the music will be what makes the moment special.

Where there’s a good connection, Monday’s choice will link to the actor featured later in the week.

To begin with, Michael Douglas week will take us to A Chorus Line and “One”—a chance to revisit that finale and the dancers whose individual stories lead up to it.

Friday: 7 Greatest Performances

This is a feature I’m particularly excited to build on: choosing seven standout performances from one actor’s career.

These will be my personal selections from the films I’ve watched. The roles that impressed me, surprised me or stayed with me afterwards—and the performances that remind me why I enjoy watching that actor.

Michael Douglas is next, with Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and plenty more to follow.

Choosing just seven should be interesting. I’m sure there will be some difficult omissions, and I want to hear which performances you would include!

Sunday: The Sunday Double Bill

Two films. One connection.

The Sunday Double Bill will bring together two films that make an interesting pairing, with a little explanation of why I’ve chosen them and which order I’d watch them in.

For our actor weeks, both films will feature Friday’s performer. Sometimes they’ll reveal contrasting sides of an actor; sometimes they’ll explore similar themes in very different ways.

Our first pairing is Michael Douglas in Fatal Attraction and Basic Instinct, under the title “Trust Nobody”. Two films that should provide plenty to discuss!

Later pairings include Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada and Julie & Julia, and Tom Hanks in Big and Catch Me If You Can.

A Week Built Around an Actor

Each feature will work on its own, but together they’ll offer a small journey through an actor’s work:

A Musical Moment on Monday → Seven Greatest Performances on Friday → A Double Bill on Sunday.

I’ll link back to my existing reviews along the way, so it should also be a chance to rediscover something from the archive—or find a film you haven’t watched yet.

The regular reviews, theatre posts and other features will continue too. This simply gives us a few more film-filled things to look forward to each week!

Which actor would you like me to feature—and which two of their films would make your perfect Sunday double bill?
