Rick was once a band but now works as a wedding singer, when at one of the events he meets Danny a fading boy band star who was struggling to launch a successful solo career. Everything would change when they bond over music and Danny steals a song that Rick shared with him …

Power Ballad turns out to have a rather lovely story at it’s core and that was not what I was expecting.
We get to see Rick not being all that happy with how his life has turned out, despite having a wife and daughter being everything to him. He misses the times where he was in a real band and used to tour, now living in Ireland it is a far cry from where he saw his life. Everything is going to surely change for him when Danny decides to release a song he played for him one night after a wedding.
Naturally though Danny was all about himself and making money for his career revival. He already had the fame factor with his previous boyband and wanted that back more than anything. So despite the way he came across to Rick at the time he went against everything.
It certainly managed to highlight just how brutal the music industry can be and ownership over songs, with the music/lyrics to be a very difficult area. I found that aspect rather interesting as every now and then we do hear of a story about songs being stolen, even if it is just something that sounds similar.
Highlighting how personal song lyrics can become, and even change meaning depending on the person who sings or listens to it. I thought that was probably the most interesting aspect when we find out who Rick had written the song for, and the fact it wasn’t actually a love song. I do have to say that I really did not like Rick’s wife and daughter, they were quite frankly awful to him all of the time!
Paul Rudd is always a joy to watch isn’t he, I am sure we all feel that way by this point. He puts in a good performance and it does work well with Nick Jonas opposite him. The rest of the cast work nicely into the different parts of the story. I would say this is a film that will go under the radar a little bit, so I recommend that you try and watch it when you can!
